Antares

Antares , the heart of Scorpio, the alpha star of the constellation Scorpio, is a red supergiant millions of times larger than our Sun. It is approximately the size of the orbit of Mars around the Sun, its spectral type is mixed. Antares represents the heart of the celestial Scorpion , one of the most important and well-known Babe stars since ancient times, since the Egyptians already knew it and with it they indicated one of the three most important seasons, in this case the harvesting season.

introduction

This star giant, to 520 years light , has a diameter 500 times that of the sun . If it were in the center of the solar system, it would span the Earth. Although it is only 500 million years old, the sheer size of its mass indicates that it has already made use of the hydrogen reserves in its core.. When the hydrogen fusion reactions were interrupted, it became unstable, cooling and growing until it reached its gigantic dimensions. New reactions in the nucleus began to produce heavier elements like carbon, and compounds like silicates and titanium dioxide. As they rose to the surface, they condensed into small particles and expanded into a large nebula that reflects the yellow color of Antares. The photo is the work of the British Schmidt telescope at the Anglo-Australian Observatory.

Name’s origin

Antares, means the Enemy of Ares, God of war, this due to its resemblance to the naked eye with the red planet Mars, a planet that in Greek mythology represents the God of war, Ares. The star Antares is also known by the name of Kalb al Akrab, which in Arabic means “The heart of the Scorpion”
