biographical synthesis

He was born in Santiago on February 5 , 1956 .

After winning the Air France international literary scholarship of the Antoine de St. Exupéry contest at the age of 18 , he entered a degree in architecture at the University of Chile in 1979 . He studied film at the Instituto Chileno Norteamericano de Cultura in Santiago. In the late seventies, he participated in competitions and exhibitions where he stood out as a sculptor, engraver and installer.

In 1982 he won the Fundación del Pacífico Scholarship and settled in New York , United States , where he began to develop a solid and recognized international career. In 2000 she was awarded the Mac Arthur Fellowship Grant, which honors individuals of exceptional merit and sustained high-quality creative work. He was distinguished with the Winton Chair for Liberal Arts by the University of Minnesota in the United States , which is awarded to scholars who have questioned established patterns of thought and who have developed research challenging and expanding cultural paradigms.

This Chilean architect has always been a strong critic of political, economic and social discrimination. We can see all this in his different photographic and visual works, for example, his installation “Lights in the city” from 1990 , made in Montreal – Canada , which shows the “silent voices” of the refugees, of those who do not are taken into account. This installation consisted of Alfredo installing red lights in a dome that was not used in the city, and in the different shelters he had a switch so that people could turn on the red light to be noticed. This caused a lot of controversy and therefore did not last as long as planned.

Trajectory

His works are related to issues such as social, political and geographical crises. All this relationship is due to the critical and strong content that the different works handle, since, as previously stated, it is an invitation to the memory of peoples who tend to forget everything easily and the enhancement of all those situations. For his world-renowned career in photography, video and installation, he won the 2013 National Art Award .

Attached to the conceptual line, it is part of the Chilean avant-garde with a visual proposal that raised the communicational limitations and advantages of art to approach the social space.

Since the mid-1980s, Jaar’s work has been characterized by his strong criticism of political, economic and social discrimination. Using the language of art, he became a staunch opponent of global development policies.

He has traveled the world with camera in hand, rescuing images that denounce the problems of poverty, hunger, war, the exploitation of man, AIDS and racial and political discrimination. The use of these images leads to reflection on power, the media, and the responsibility that falls on them in the matter of manipulation and trivialization of great human catastrophes.

Jaar’s installations are transitory, they last as long as they are exhibited and for this he uses the so-called mix-media, that is, light resources, photography and other utilitarian materials of modern life. Generally, the place where they are exhibited and the spectators themselves, are incorporated into the totality of the work on the assumption of being active interpreters of it.
