Preliminary information
Before getting to the heart of this guide and showing you, in practice, how to change your password on PS4 , I think it is my duty to give you some clarifications regarding the types of “access keys” that can be used on the console.
In the current state of things, the types of passwords that can be set on PlayStation 4 are at least three.
- System password– this access key is used to impose a series of very specific restrictions on the console, such as blocking the creation of new users or filters for web content, apps, games, and so on.
- Profile Password– This is a password that can block access to a specific user profile configured on the PlayStation.
- PSN password– this password is used to protect your PlayStation Network account (essential to take advantage of many features of the PS4, including the use of PlayStation Plus ).
As you may have easily guessed, these three “passwords” dominate very different aspects of the PS4 user experience and are absolutely unrelated to each other. I consider it necessary to specify that, in case of loss, it is possible to recover only the password associated with the PSN: to reset the other two codes, however, it is necessary to proceed with a complete reset of the console.
How to change the password of the PS4 system
If you’re interested in changing the password you set to restrict certain PS4 features (e.g. preventing new users from being created, applying web or content filtering), then you’ll be pleased to know that doing so is really a breeze. .
First, turn on the PlayStation 4 and, using the directional arrows on the pad, bring up the main menu of the system and access the Settings section , by selecting the toolbox icon and pressing the X button on the controller.
Then, go to the Content Filter / Family Management section and access the Restrictions area of the PS4 system : at this point, if you had already set a password previously, enter it using the left, right, up, down, R1, R2, L1, L2, square and triangle ; if, on the other hand, it is the first time you are accessing this area, press the square button four consecutive times to enter the default access code ( 0000 ).
At this point, the game is done: to change the password to be used to unlock the system restrictions, select the Change system restriction access code item , enter the password used previously, using the appropriate keys (or the password PS4 default lock code , if you’ve never changed it before) and, when prompted, enter the new code twice in a row.
Note : There is no suitable procedure for recovering the dedicated PS4 settings lock code. This means that, in case of loss, you will be forced to reset the console to restore it and / or cancel the restrictions set.
How to change PS4 profile password
If, on the other hand, it is in your interest to change the password you use to access your user profile on the PlayStation 4 (thus preventing other people from accessing your saves, your game preferences and all other data strictly connected to your profile ), the steps you need to follow are slightly different than those seen previously.
To begin with, access the PS4 Settings , selecting the toolbox icon , go to the Users section and, from there, access the Login Settings and Access Code Management areas .
At this point, if you have never used this feature before, select the item Set access code: Login for PS4 , create a password to use to protect your profile, using the left, right, up, down, R1, R2, L1, L2, square and triangle , and enter it twice consecutively in the appropriate fields that are proposed to you.
To change your old password, on the other hand, you must select the Change access code item , enter the code in use in the boxes displayed on the screen and type the new access code twice consecutively .
If multiple user profiles are configured on the PlayStation 4 and you want to change the access code for each of them, press and hold the PS button on the pad (the central one, with the PlayStation logo on it ), select Change user from the menu displayed on the screen, choose the profile on which you are interested to act and repeat the same steps seen above to make the desired change.
To save the changes you have made, you must log out of your profile (by pressing and holding the PS button and choosing the Log out from PS4 item located in the menu that appears) or restart the PS4 .
