Tecumseh (He who walks over water). A famous Shaw- nee Chief, born near the Sciota River, Ohio, in 1740. He was of the highest conception of the Indian character, of open counte- nance and noble bearing, with an intense loyalty for the land of his fathers. He was of silent habit, dignified and of sterner cast. Through his eloquence he formed the western Tribes in a confederation to regain what he termed their inheritance. He entered into an alliance with the British in 1812, holding the rank of a Brigadier General, and in 1813 he was killed, while com- manding the right wing of their army.
