How to know if a call is spam or a scam?

Anti-spam filters have become one of the most widely used techniques by Android and iPhone iOS users to avoid receiving commercial calls at any time of day.The General Telecommunications Law came into force in June 2023 and prohibits unwanted commercial calls , but countless brands have continued to make them. Users have started to take serious measures such as activating the mobile filter or signing up for the Robinson List .

Tips to detect spam calls on iOS and Android

Almost all cell phones now have built-in spam call filters that allow numbers to be identified and blocked when the time comes.

Most handsets will not display the alert, but rather a notification that an incoming call has been blocked .

Android uses the Google My Business platform to detect the numbers of companies that use its tool. Users are given basic information about the company name along with the (often unknown) phone number and can decide whether they want to take the call.

Google My Business works automatically and does not block numbers, but the spam filter is activated by users and prevents them from receiving commercial calls. This option can be activated in a few seconds from the Phone application on Android phones .

  • Go to “More options” by clicking on the three vertical dots.
  • Select “Settings” and then “Caller ID & Spam.”
  • Turn on “Show caller ID” and “Filter spam calls” options .

Android phones will block all numbers that Google identifies as spam . Users will also be able to create their own list reporting numbers, which will be blocked from future calls.

Apple uses a similar system with the “Silence Unknown Numbers” option in Settings/Phone , although some users turn to a third-party app known as TrueCaller that is far more effective at identifying spam.

The app uses an Android-like formula to name incoming calls, for example, “Spam – Telephone Company” . This feature can be activated from TrueCaller settings by going to “Phone”, then “Identification” and activating the “Call Blocking” option.
