The House of Sorrows is the location of an old Sharite monastery hidden away, where the final part of Shadowheart’s personal quest “Daughter of Darkness” takes place. In this guide, we’ll tell you how to get there and how to infiltrate the Hall of Loss.
Depending on the decisions you made during the quest “Find the Nightsong” , some plot details may differ. In our playthrough, we convinced Shadowheart to save the Nightsong and will proceed from there.

Where to find a Sharite spy?
Once you reach Rivington at the start of Act 3 of Baldur’s Gate 3, you’ll need to help Shadowheart find and interrogate a Sharite spy. This is a man named Ferg Drogger, who stands on the road between Arfur’s Manor and the Requisitioned Barn.
Trust your companion to do the talking and she’ll tell you that the Sharite monastery she’s looking for is hidden in the House of Sorrows in Baldur’s Gate’s Lower City. Continue through the story and complete other quests until you get a pass there.
Where to find House of Sorrows in Baldur’s Gate 3?
The House of Sorrows is located in the northwest part of Lower City, on the road north of Lady Jannat’s Estate. Inside, you need to talk to the girl standing behind the counter – Miri.
Find a way to get into the Monastery of the Dark Embrace
Miri will tell you that you must first undergo a heart survey and will ask you to follow her into the next room. This procedure requires complete privacy and will begin as soon as you are seated.
To trigger the next cutscene, sit Shadowheart on the granite bench and wait for Viconia DeVir to appear. This will place a debuff on your companion that will hinder her in the next fight, but it cannot be avoided.
How to defeat Viconia DeVir?
In the Monastery of the Dark Embrace, you will have to make a decision – support Shadowheart or conspire with Viconia to help you fight the Absolute.
Since in the second option you will have to hand over your companion to her, we will not consider it seriously. However, for the further battle it will be more advantageous to first talk to Viconia as the main character, detaching Shadowheart from the squad and leaving her further away at the entrance.
If you pass one of the checks and end this conversation neutrally, you will be able to move around the room and calmly place your companions in advantageous positions, rather than starting a fight while standing in a group.
There are really a lot of enemies here, so we recommend that you take with you spellcasters that deal powerful damage to the group and place them in the side passages.
Note the use of radiant damage in this fight: all enemies are vulnerable to it except Viconia herself, who reflects it back at the attacker in double the amount. Therefore, it is better to leave Shadowheart with her Wraithguard and Faithguard closer to the center, having summoned a deva for support beforehand.
Also try to get rid of the Sharite guards with staffs as soon as possible, as they will actively use Darkness and Bone-piercing Cold spells, which will not allow you to heal.
Viconia, by the way, has a number of nasty abilities. The most dangerous of them is Divine Intervention, which can deal significant damage to all visible targets once per battle. She can also heal, turn into a wolf, and has an advantage when attacking from the shadows.
Viconia DeVir: Kill or Spare?
After the battle is over, you can decide whether to spare Viconia DeVir’s life. Frankly, mercy here seems completely useless, since in this case you will not receive any rewards from her.
She’ll just hobble away, and you’ll be left without the legendary shield, which gives you the following bonuses:
- Rebuff of Might – When an enemy damages you with a melee attack, you can use your Reaction to deal 2-8 Force damage to them and knock them prone unless they pass a Dexterity saving throw.
- Defensive Spells – You have advantage on saving throws against spells. Attack rolls made by spells against you have disadvantage.
- The Reflective Shell class action – you are enveloped in a protective shell that reflects projectiles aimed at you back to where they came from.
- The spell Protective Bonds – casts a ward on an ally. They gain resistance to all damage and a +1 bonus to armor class and tests. Each time the creature protected by the bonds takes damage, the caster takes the same amount of damage.
Key to Viconia’s personal chest
Before moving on, we recommend that you carefully explore the hall. If you go to the room to the north, you will meet Nocturne there – an old friend of Shadowheart, who can tell you more about her past.
If you follow this corridor to the end, you will also find a small jewelry box there, which is opened with the Key to Viconia’s Personal Chest. Inside, oddly enough, there is another key – this time to storage 8 in the Accounts Chamber. We wrote more about this location in the Minsk guide .
You can also explore the small room to the southeast to find a secret hideout with night orchids where Shadowheart once liked to hide. You’ll need to break down a wooden barrier to get there.
Threshold of Loss: How to Enter the Hall of Loss?
To overcome the Threshold of Loss and enter the Hall of Loss, you will have to open a large door with a mysterious sign in front of it: “Only the Loss of the City Father can open this door.”
There are actually several ways to do this:
- You can open it with a DC 30 Sleight of Hand check or by using a spell;
- You can report to the altar, where the black diamond already lies, a sufficient number of valuable items (something around 1000-2000 gold);
- You can carefully search all the corpses and take from one of them the Silver Key, which opens this door.
Shadowheart’s Parents: Save or Kill?
Upon entering the Hall of Loss, you will have to help Shadowheart make a difficult decision regarding the fate of her parents. She must choose between freeing them or breaking the curse of Shar:
- The parents will insist that Shadowheart must let them go to save herself. If you leave the choice up to your companion, she will listen to them, but will later regret this choice;
- You can also convince Shadowheart to save the parents by passing a Religion or Persuasion check at DC 20. Afterwards, they will stop at your camp to recuperate, and tell their daughter that they love her and accept her. Although the curse will not be broken, in our opinion, this is a happier ending.
How to use the Mirror of Loss?
Behind the altar where Shadowheart’s parents were chained, there is a Mirror of Loss that you can interact with. There are two ways to do this that will result in a win:
- Pass a Religion check at difficulty 25 – after this you can sacrifice 2 points of one characteristic (this curse can later be removed) in exchange for two points of another;
- Send a character who has forbidden knowledge from Thai Necromancy to the mirror – in this case, even if you fail the religion check, you can take two bonus characteristic points.
