biographical synthesis
Devoted from his early youth to the plastic arts and literary creation, he studied architecture and, once he graduated, opened his own design studio in the Argentine capital. However, he is best known for his brilliant forays into the field of narrative, both in the complex genre modality of the short story and in the vast domains of the extended novel.
His name began to sound strongly in Buenos Aires literary circles in the mid-1990s, when he was a finalist for two consecutive years ( 1996 and 1997 ) in the short story contest organized by the publishing label Planeta.
literary career
He published the book of stories Playa quemada (Alfaguara, 1994 ) and won First Prize at the 1989 Biennial of Young Art and First Prize of the Deliberative Council of the City of Buenos Aires in 1993 .
Twice a finalist for the Planeta Prize for the novels La flor azteca (1997) and El amor feliz (Alfaguara, 2000 ) and a finalist for the Clarín Novel Prize in previous editions for El corazón de Doli ( 2010 ), he is also the author of the books by stories Marvin (Alfaguara, 2004 ).
Municipal Prize for Literature Biennium 98/99, Goodbye, Bob ( 2006 ) and La fe blind ( 2009 ), and for the novel Auschwitz (Alfaguara, 2004 ), First Prize Antorchas 2003 .
Several of his short stories are featured in anthologies in Latin America , Spain , Germany , Poland , Sweden , and Russia . Nielsen writes articles on the city and design in the Radar supplement of Página/12, and since 2005 he has run the blogs Milanesa con papas and Mandarina.
To this initial compilation of stories (Playa Quemada) was added, three years after he went out on the street, the first extensive narration by the Buenos Aires writer, La flor azteca (Buenos Aires: Planeta, 1997 ), a work that came to confirm his magnificent aptitudes for the cultivation of fictional prose. Subsequently, Gustavo Nielsen gave the press a new novelistic delivery that, under the title of Sick Love ( 2000 ), has definitively consecrated him among the great revelations of the Argentine narrative of the end of the 20th century .
as an architect
In his role as a plastic artist, the writer from Buenos Aires has been in charge of illustrating the covers of his works. As an architect he has carried out works in Buenos Aires, Córdoba, San Luis and Montevideo . His Galponestudio, in the Chacarita neighborhood, has won several awards and since 2008 he has shared it with the architects Ramiro Gallardo and Max Zolkwer .
