Why Roccats Vulcan 121 is the best gaming and office keyboard for me

Anyone who works in the home office needs a good keyboard . DLPrivateServer editor Benedikt Schlotmann had already purchased Roccats Vulcan in Spring 2020 and has not regretted it to this day. The keyboard has become an integral part of your everyday life.

This is my situation: I like to work and play on my desktop computer and I also sit at my desk a lot. That’s why I bought a desk lamp this year for 30 euros.

Also, my main focus is on an author’s most important tool and that is the keyboard. As I had to write and proofread a lot of texts both at work and during my studies, I wanted to get a good keyboard and was ready to invest a little more here.

Here’s how I proceeded: When buying a keyboard, three things were particularly important to me:

  • On the one hand, this is a clear feeling when typing: I need a clear resistance, I want to feel how I press the keys.
  • Also: I write blindly now, but well-lit keys are very important to me despite the lamp.
  • On the other hand, I need some additional functions. The multimedia keys are always useful and I use some useful macros regularly.

With these thoughts in mind, I went to the local specialty store and looked at the keyboards. In the end, two manufacturers managed to convince me.

Logitech or Roccat: so I decided in the end

In the end, I chose the Roccat Vulcan 121 and the Logitech G815.

That spoke for Roccat: I already had the Roccat Kone AIMO Remastered, you can read the test here on DLPrivateServer, and I had good experiences with both processing and software.

He had also used the Roccat Isku a few years ago. This is a gaming keyboard that uses membrane keys that I got for Christmas. However, the device remained in the house when it was moved.

That spoke for Logitech: At Logitech, I also had good experiences with the software. So far I am satisfied with the manufacturer’s mice and headphones. In the headphone area in particular, the Logitech G Pro X is currently my favorite.

Another strong argument for the Logitech keyboard was the additional USB port and the low keys. Above all, the low keys are ergonomically very comfortable and also increase typing speed. The workmanship is similar to Roccat’s. Above all, I was put off by the dim key lighting, the even higher price, and the lack of a palm rest.

Who did I pick? In the end I bought the Roccat Vulcan 121.

In the meantime, I have had other keyboards under my fingers and after about a year and a half of use, I can say that I could hardly type on a better keyboard. I will explain why, based on my experiences in this article.

Keys are the most important thing to me in games and the office.

Here are the advantages: Roccat relies on an aluminum plate for its keyboard, on which, in turn, the switches are mounted. This gives the keyboard a high-quality appearance and stands out from many inexpensive representatives. Cheap plastic housings also have the disadvantage that they amplify the noise from metal switches. This is not uncommon in the $ 50 range.

The keyboard is based on an open, almost aggressive design with AIMO light effects, which in turn can be combined with other AIMO devices. A possibility that I like to use when I am not testing other mice on my computer. It doesn’t matter for my abilities, but it still looks great. It is also good that the lighting is strong, but not dazzling.

A special highlight for me are the titanium switches that Roccat installed under the buttons. When I bought it, I chose the “Titan Switch Tactile”:

  • These have a nice line with a clear resistance.
  • The keystroke not only makes gaming enjoyable, but I can also type long texts without any problem.
  • Titanium changes under the keys.

Above all, the buttons can be heard and felt. Subjectively, I have the feeling that I am more precise because I hear every attack. Quiet keyboards are too soft and imprecise for me personally because I can’t hear the sound. Some manufacturers now offer “virtual” keystrokes: Instead of the keyboard, the software makes noises when you press a key. Personally, I don’t like that.

What are keyboard switches? The switches are below the buttons and give your commands to the computer. Keyboard switches come in three colors: red, blue, and brown. The blue switches can be felt and heard, and the red switches are extremely easy to use and require little force. The built-in switches offer noticeable and tactile feedback and therefore represent a good middle ground for gamers who have to type a lot in addition to playing games. Roccat’s titanium switches sit somewhere between the brown and red “CHERRY MX” switches.

Thanks to Easy-Shift, all keys can also be assigned twice. In this way, you can create benefits or emoticons and assign them to certain keys without clicking through the menus. The Swarm software also offers a macro manager here.

For another test, I had ordered a cheap Sharkoon gaming keyboard and was amazed at how clear the difference is between very cheap and high-quality titanium switches. The difference is particularly noticeable when it comes to feel and volume. It is like driving down a dirt road onto a paved road.

At first I made a lot of typing mistakes with Vulcan

Here are the downsides: The open keyboard layout is a bit odd at first. Because the buttons are a little higher because the switches don’t disappear on the case. Especially in the first few weeks I kept typing errors or grabbed the Windows key with the palm of my hand. That was annoying, especially at first, but I quickly got used to the design.

It’s a shame that the keyboard cable can’t be removed and the keyboard doesn’t have additional connections. Therefore, I cannot connect my headphones, mouse, or other devices directly to the keyboard.

With such an expensive device, I think the manufacturer’s decision to forego a USB hub is a shame. Especially with Fnatic Streak, I have always liked using this hub.

The keys are exposed and slightly taller than on comparable keyboards. This is where Logitech’s low-profile switches are most enjoyable to start with.

The high price is also an impediment at the beginning. 140 euros for a keyboard was a hurdle for me at first. On the other hand, I received solid workmanship and most of all, a sleek design and nice keys.

In general, I am not very convinced of the palm rest. Whereas with Razers Huntsman or BlackWidow you put your hands on a kind of artificial leather, which is pleasantly soft, here your hands are on plastic. To do this, the hands are at a comfortable height.

  • suitable for playing and writing
  • noticeable and audible stop

high durability thanks to high-quality aluminum housing

each configurable key (EasyShift)

bright and uniform lighting

no detachable cable

no additional connections for USB or audio

Who is the keyboard for? With the Roccat Vulcan 120 you get a full size keyboard. This means that you get a keyboard with a number pad. You should note that the keys are slightly higher due to the open design. It seems a bit strange at first, but you get used to it quickly.

Basically, you have to carry the keyboard with the palm rest, also because the keys are higher due to the switches. The lack of a palm rest is less noticeable on the G815 with the low keys.

The keyboard is generally expensive at 130-150 euros, but you also get high-quality workmanship, hot keys, and impressive workmanship. If you’re looking for a similar high-quality keyboard, but don’t trust the Vulcan’s design, you can also use the Logitech G815.

If you are looking for a keyboard without a number pad, you will also find it at Roccat. Because the manufacturer now offers a version of its Vulcan series without a number block (TKL). At DLPrivateServer we have tested the Vulcan TKL Pro. The keyboard offers the same build quality and changes from Roccat. Unlike the Vulcan 121, you can also remove the cable. You are also searching in vain for a USB hub here.
