Zechariah began his ministry as a prophet at a time when the construction of the temple was stopped, by order of the king of Persia. The people were discouraged and no longer wanted to continue the work. God sent Zechariah and his contemporary Haggai to cheer up the people. Thanks to the prophecies of Zechariah and Haggai, the Israelites were more motivated and completed the construction of the temple ( Ezra 5: 1-2 ).
The prophecies of Zechariah
In addition to encouraging the people to rebuild the temple, Zacharias made several prophecies about the coming of the Savior and the end times . Several of Zechariah’s prophecies were fulfilled when Jesus came to earth:

- Jesus’ betrayal for 30 pieces of silver – Zechariah 11:13; Matthew 27: 3-5
- Jesus’ death in Jerusalem – Zechariah 12: 10-11; Luke 23: 46-49

The priest Zacharias and his wife were very old when the angel Gabriel appeared to him and said that he would have a son. Zechariah doubted, so he was speechless until the birth of his son John ( Luke 1: 18-20 ). When the boy was born, Zacharias praised God.
