Who should avoid taking aspirin
Aspirin is a non – steroidal anti-inflammatory that can be used for pain and inflammation in some situations and also to reduce fever.
However, there are cases in which it should not be used, because it can cause damage to health or lead to the aggravation of diseases, the following being those that have a higher risk:
1. Hypersensitivity to acetylsalicylic acid
People who are allergic to acetylsalicylic acid often experience symptoms such as redness and itching of the skin, swelling of the lips and eyes, and fever, shortly after taking it or up to an hour later.
In these cases, you should go to the hospital urgently, discontinue the drug and not take it again.
2. Asma
Aspirin should not be used in people with asthma, because aspirin can induce an asthma attack because it causes a temporary increase in the inflammatory response.
Studies show that about 20% of people with asthma develop an acute attack after taking aspirin.
3. Stomach ulcer
Aspirin should not be used in people with stomach ulcers, because acetylsalicylic acid inhibits an enzyme that is responsible for producing prostaglandins, which protect this organ.
Thus, if you decrease the amount of prostaglandins, the stomach is less protected and therefore more susceptible to gastric acidity, which can worsen ulcers.
4. Hemorrhagic diathesis
Bleeding diathesis, also known as a bleeding tendency, is characterized by bleeding that is more intense or prolonged than normal.
Due to the fact that aspirin reduces the aggregation of platelets, which contribute to blood clotting, it should not be used in these cases, as it can intensify the bleeding even more.
5. Severe kidney and liver failure
Aspirin can impair kidney and liver function, so it should not be used in people with kidney and liver failure.
6. Pregnant
Aspirin, unless at a low dose, can induce fetal ductus arteriosus closure, reduce the amount of amniotic fluid, cause bleeding disorders and lead to prolonged labor, so it should not be given to pregnant women in the second half of pregnancy. .
Even during the first half of pregnancy, aspirin should only be used if recommended by your doctor.
