Who is House Blackfyre in Game of Thrones: House of the Dragon?

If you’re a long-time fan of the Game of Thrones book series, you may have read about the infamous House Blackfyre. But, even though they are a crucial part of the lore, the show didn’t have enough time to establish their history. So who is House Blackfyre and how do they connect to Game of Thrones: House of the Dragon?

House Blackfyre in Game of Thrones: House of the Dragon Explained

While watching the Game of Thrones: House of the Dragon trailer, you can see the mighty sword called “Blackfyre” in the hands of King Viserys Targaryen. The history of this weapon dates back to when Aegon the Conqueror wielded it in various battles with the incredible power of his Valyrian steel.

After the sword was passed on to the next generation, it ended up in the hands of Daemon Waters (also known as Daemon Blackfyre), a bastard son of Daena and Aegon IV Targaryen. Note that this character is not the same as Daemon Targaryen in Game of Thrones: House of the Dragon, as they are two completely different people.

Once Daemon receives his father’s weapon, many believe he will become Aegon’s heir, angering Daeron II Targaryens and sparking subsequent rebellions. Shortly after this, Daemon develops House Blackfyre, a name that is an homage to the great sword.

In his quest for power, Daemon begins to rebel against the Targaryens because he believes that he is the rightful heir, mainly because his father gave him Blackfyre. This motivation would eventually lead to the first Blackfyre Rebellion, where Daeron and Daemon fought each other.

Unfortunately, the madness never stopped, and this act of warfare resulted in four more battles that may have caused the fall of the Targaryen line.

How is House Blackfyre connected to Game of Thrones: House of Dragon?

According to the timeline of events, Game of Thrones: House of Dragon takes place before the Blackfyre rebellions. Additionally, some have claimed that the show’s civil war is one of the reasons Daemon defies Daemon’s family. So the series could dig deeper into House Blackfyre in the future.
