It is difficult to find a smartphone manufacturer as active as Samsung : the Korean giant “churns out” dozens of terminals a year for all budgets and needs and keeping up with it is really a feat! There is a lot of freedom of choice but when it comes time to buy a new phone, you never know which one to go to.
Here is the reason why today I decided to publish this post and give you some advice on which Samsung smartphone to choose . We will see, therefore, which are the Samsung models on which it is worth focusing in this period and their technical characteristics.
As already mentioned, there is something for all tastes and budgets: from cheap terminals sold below 150 euros to top-of-the-range smartphones that cost over 600 euros. It’s up to you to choose the one that best suits your needs (and your budget). They are all equipped with the Android operating system declined in various versions and customized with Samsung’s One UI interface. Happy reading and good “hunting”. How to choose a Samsung smartphone
To best evaluate Samsung smartphones and find out which Samsung smartphone to choose , you have to take into consideration various characteristics. Here are some of the most important.
Samsung’s smartphones are divided into various product families, each of which is addressed to a different type of user and includes devices of various price ranges. Here they are all in detail.
- Samsung Galaxy J– the “J” family represents a series of budget smartphones no longer in production. These smartphones were intended for an audience that looks more at price than at performance or the quality of construction materials.
- Samsung Galaxy M– are low-mid-range smartphones with unique characteristics in terms of size and battery capacity. In fact, they can have large displays and batteries of up to 6,000mAh.
- Samsung Galaxy A– the smartphones of the “A” family are mid and medium-high range. They offer part of the advantages of the top of the range while maintaining a more affordable price than the latter.
- Samsung Galaxy S– the “S” smartphone family is the top of the range. In this family there can be, for each generation, different products with similar characteristics in power, but different in module factor and other aesthetic or functional details.
- Samsung Galaxy Note– smartphones belonging to this family have a very large screen and are characterized by the pen holder. This means that you can interact with them using a stylus that allows you to take notes, draw and so on using functions and apps specifically designed by Samsung. Unfortunately after the “flop” of Galaxy Note 7, which was withdrawn from the market due to serious battery overheating problems, this range of devices is a bit stagnant, but should soon be back in vogue.
- Samsung Galaxy Z– represents the family of Samsung smartphones with flexible displays, therefore capable of being used both in smartphone mode (with display then folded), and in tablet mode (with open display). Within this family you will find the Z Flip models , with flexible display in portrait orientation and the Z Fold models , in landscape orientation.
Most Samsung smartphones are equipped with a Super AMOLED type display that ensures very deep blacks and a good yield in sunlight. You just have to evaluate the resolution of the screen (the more pixels there are, the more defined the images and texts reproduced on the display) and the size of the latter: a larger screen can make the use of content more comfortable but it can decrease the handling of the display. phone. Then there is to consider the aspect ratio of the display, the percentage of surface occupied on the front side of the device and the presence of the notch., ie the front “notch” that on devices where the screen occupies almost the entire front of the phone houses the camera (or cameras) and the sensors for facial unlocking. The notch can be in classic format (iPhone X style, so to speak); smaller, therefore “drop” , or it can be replaced by a “hole” in a corner of the display, in which the front cameras are set.
I advise you, then, to pay attention to Samsung devices that have an Edge screen , that is, a very curved screen on the sides: the curves are so beautiful to look at, but they can be uncomfortable in everyday use. Often you end up touching the edges of the display unintentionally and activating “Edge” functions at random! It also evaluates the presence of the brightness sensor that automatically adjusts the brightness of the screen based on the brightness of the surrounding environment.
Some mid-range and high-end Samsung smartphones also have the Always on function , thanks to which you can view the time, calendar and other information when the screen is off, or rather, when the phone is in standby. The information is displayed using a very low percentage of energy, so this feature does not have a big impact on the autonomy of the phone.
The latest news in terms of displays, in the Samsung line-up, are the flexible displays . Introduced to the market by Galaxy Fold , these displays can fold in one place thanks to the presence of a hinge that allows the body to flex. They are useful because they can be opened and closed as if they were a book, thus allowing you to put in your pocket a device that when open can boast a display with the typical dimensions of a tablet.
Processor and RAM
Other components to be carefully evaluated are the processor and RAM of the smartphone. The first is the “brain” of the smartphone, the second is the memory in which the device temporarily stores the data of the apps in use and the operating system. A more powerful processor (with more GHz) determines a higher speed of the phone, a higher RAM (with more GB) determines a better management of multitasking and more advanced apps, therefore also the possibility of being able to use more apps at the same time.
Battery power is measured in milliampere hours (mAh) . Generally, the more mAh there are, the longer the autonomy of the smartphone is, but we have to see if the software is well optimized. A phone with a non-optimized software, in fact, has a shorter battery life than a phone with the same amperage but a well-optimized software in terms of consumption.
You also need to consider whether the battery is removable or not. If it’s removable, you can take a spare with you and use it in an emergency.
Fingerprint sensor and facial recognition
As you surely know, the fingerprint sensor is a component that allows you to unlock your phone and authenticate yourself in various apps using your fingerprint. It is very convenient, so take this into consideration before buying your next Samsung smartphone.
The fingerprint sensors can have different speeds and degrees of precision , in any case those mounted on Samsung devices are all of excellent quality. Their position can vary: some models have them on the front (in the Home button), others on the back, which makes them a little more uncomfortable to unlock (just think of when the phone is placed on a table, in that case to unlock it using the fingerprint sensor it is necessary to hold it and lift it from the table). Newer models may have the fingerprint sensor integrated directly into the display.
Some models, then, associate the unlocking by fingerprint to the facial one : through the front camera, they are in fact able to recognize the user’s face and allow him access to the system. This system also has its pros and cons, to be evaluated according to your specific needs.
Resistance to water and dust
Some Samsung smartphones have water and dust resistance. If you are interested in this feature, choose a mid-range or top-of-the-range device, since unfortunately there are still no waterproof and dust-resistant devices in the cheaper range.
Keep in mind that the degree of waterproofing and dust resistance can vary from device to device and is indicated with very specific certifications (eg IP68 ).
It is almost useless to talk about the operating system of Samsung smartphones: it is Android customized with the TouchWiz interface or, on the most recent terminals, One UI of the Korean giant. You just have to pay attention to the version of the OS and the possibility of updating it in the future, which is guaranteed more on top-of-the-range devices than entry-level or mid-range ones, which instead are “abandoned” more quickly by the parent company. At the time of writing, the most recent version of Android is 9
Brand vs No Brand
On online store it is very easy to find models of Samsung smartphones “branded” , that is branded by telephone operators such as TIM, Vodafone and Wind, which cost less than no brand , that is, those not marked by the telephone operators.
Unlike what you might think, “branded” smartphones do not bind to the use of a specific operator’s SIM (they allow you to use the SIM of any operator), but are supplied with applications, wallpapers and other customizations made by the operator who “branded” the terminal. These customizations and apps are difficult to remove and can be annoying (especially if you decide to use a SIM from a third party). It’s up to you to assess whether the savings guaranteed by branded phones are worth putting up with the plethora of unnecessary apps and customizations they bring with them.
Connections and dual-SIM
Many of Samsung’s smartphones have dual-SIM support . The dual-SIM mechanism used by Samsung smartphones is the one called dual stand-by , like the vast majority of smartphone manufacturers on the market. This means that while one SIM is engaged in a call, the other is unreachable. The 3G, 4G or 5G connection if present, on the other hand, can almost always be passed from one SIM to another without the need to physically move the card from one slot to another (function called hot switch). The slot of the second SIM in some cases can be shared with that of the SD, so you have to choose whether to use two SIMs or whether to expand the internal memory of the smartphone.
I told you about 5G connections . Clearly evaluate, based on your needs, whether to buy a smartphone with a new generation connection today. The presence of the 5G modem clearly increases the price, but makes the purchase longer, which can boast a longer duration over time without becoming obsolete. All Samsung smartphones on the market today support at least 4G connection.
Which Samsung smartphone to buy
So, are you ready to find out which Samsung smartphone best suits your needs? If your answer is yes, take five minutes of free time and take a look at the terminals listed below: among them you will surely find something that is right for you.
Note: some older smartphones may be sold at higher prices than recommended (which I used as a basis for the making of this post). If you notice a too high retail price for a smartphone that is not the most recent, visit the Amazon page of the latter and look for a cheaper offer among all those available, perhaps in the used one. Having made this necessary premise, we can really take action!

Samsung Galaxy A02s
Samsung Galaxy A02s is an inexpensive smartphone, without too many frills, designed for those who do not have great needs. It mounts the Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 processor with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of expandable storage space and is equipped with three rear cameras of which only one is really usable, with a 13 MP sensor. The front camera is inserted in a teardrop notch and is 5 MP, which is also quite essential. The smartphone is however equipped with a 5,000mAh battery that offers excellent autonomy, supported by fast charging at 15W. The display is 6.5 inches in HD resolution, while the overall weight of this device is 196 grams by virtue of the large integrated battery.

At the low end we also have the Samsung Galaxy A12che can say its especially for an incredibly advantageous price if you are unpretentious. The display is very large from 6.5 inches with LCD technology and HD + resolution (720 x 1600 pixels), in the drop-shaped notch, there is the front camera and the ear capsule with a decent quality audio. In addition to the USB Type-C port there is the 3.5 mm hole to connect wired headphones, two slots for nano SIMs and a dedicated slot to expand the memory via MicroSD. Instead, support for 4G + connectivity and 5 GHz WiFi networks is missing. The processor is an octa-core MediaTek Helio P35 (4 × 2.35 GHz Cortex-A53 + 4 × 1.8 GHz Cortex-A53) flanked by 4 GB of RAM and 64 or 128 GB of internal memory, expandable. The photographic sector is composed as follows: 48 megapixels, f / 2.0 (wide angle); 5 megapixels, f / 2.2, 123˚ (ultra wide angle); 2 megapixel, f / 2.4, (macro); 2 megapixel, f / 2.4, (for depth) and 8 megapixel the selfie camera. Not brand new but still very interesting for the specs and the price is undoubtedly the Galaxy A22 as an entry-level solution. Here it has a 6.4 “Infinity-V display with HD + resolution but still with excellent color calibration as Samsung teaches. In addition to this there is a complete photographic sector consisting of 4 cameras, the main 48MP with OIS ef / 1.8, an 8MP ultra wide angle with f / 2.2 and then again two sensors from both 2MP with the task of taking macro or even depth photos. The processor present is an Octa Core with 4GB of RAM and with an internal storage of 64GB which can, however, be expanded via microSD.The battery is a 5,000 mAh and this means that you can really afford days of autonomy.

Samsung Galaxy M12
For the M family there is Galaxy M12as an entry-level solution, a smartphone with a fairly large size, 164 x 75.9 x 9.7 mm, for a weight that exceeds 200 grams. This is due to the large built-in 5,000 mAh battery, which can be quickly recharged at 15W and the 6.5 “HD + resolution LCD display (1600 x 720 pixels). This smartphone uses an Exynos 850 processor and you can buy it in a version with 4 GB of RAM and 64GB of storage space or 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage space. In any case there is the possibility of expanding the storage with a microSD. We then have four cameras, of which the main 48 MP and an ultra wide angle from 5MP. The smartphone is completed with the 3.5mm audio jack, Bluetooth 5.0 support and fingerprint sensor placed on one side of the frame.

Samsung Galaxy A32 5G
A great mid-range device, the cheapest 5G smartphone from South Koreans. I recommend it both for less demanding users and for those who have already had other Android smartphones and know how to use them without problems. The display is a 6.5 “IPS LCD also installed on low-end smartphones, as well as the large 5,000mAh battery and 15W fast charging. Also on the camera level, albeit of satisfactory quality and flush with the rest. of the body, there are no major changes: we have a 48 MP quad camera for the main one, supported by an 8 MP ultra wide-angle module and macro and depth modules. What changes is the processor, a MediaTek Dimensity 720 5G with good performance which also includes support for next generation networks. I propose it below with 4 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage, expandable via microSD. Again the fingerprint sensor is installed on one of the sides.

Samsung Galaxy M32
The Samsung Galaxy M32 is also very good: a mid-range supports a significantly faster recharge than the other models I have told you about so far. The design is the bezel-less one with drop notch of the latest mid-range of the Korean giant, it supports fingerprint release (via side sensor) and has very respectable specifications in relation to cost. The performance, of course, is not top of the range, but we have a good 6.4 “SuperAMOLED display with 1080 x 2400 pixels of resolution, a MediaTek Helio G80 chipset that offers a good reserve of power compared to other economic solutions, 64 o 128GB of internal memory (expandable with microSD, with dedicated slot), 4 or 6 GB of RAM and a 5,000 mAh battery with excellent autonomy with 25W charging. The photographic sector is entrusted to a quadruple rear camera from 64 + 8 + 2 + 2 MP capable of recording videos in Full HD and a front camera from 20MP with opening f / 2.2. The terminal is quite important in size, weighing about 200 grams, and is customized with the OneUI 3.1 based on Android 11.

Samsung Galaxy A52
One of Samsung’s most interesting mid-range smartphones belongs to the “A” family and specifically I am referring to Samsung Galaxy A52 . Like other devices from the South Korean manufacturer, it comes in two variants: one with 4G support, the other capable of connecting to new generation networks. Galaxy A52 4G is equipped with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 720G processor and a 6.5-inch SuperAMOLED display of excellent quality at Full HD resolution, compatible with a maximum refresh rate of 90Hz, while Galaxy A52 5Git is powered by an identical display in terms of diagonal and resolution, but with support for 120Hz as the maximum refresh rate and with the Snapdragon 750G processor with integrated 5G modem. Both are aesthetically identical, with dimensions of 159.9 x 75.1 x 8.4mm and a weight of 189 grams. They can be equipped with different cuts of memories and we have integrated fingerprint sensor in the display, face unlock, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, support for ac and dual-band wireless networks and a respectable photographic compartment, consisting of four rear cameras: one 64MP with f / 1.8 aperture and 26mm (wide) lens, one 12MP with f / 2.2 aperture and 123 ° field of view (ultrawide) and two 5MP with f / 2.4 aperture, respectively for taking macro and bokeh photos. The front camera is 32MP with f / 2 aperture. 2 and 26mm (wide) lens. On the software side we find the OneUI 3.1 based on Android 11 on both models, while the body is certified for resistance to liquids and dust within certain limits.

Samsung Galaxy S21 / Galaxy S21 +
Featuring the powerful in-house Exynos 2100 SoC, the Samsung Galaxy S21 and Samsung Galaxy S21 + represent the manufacturer’s high-end for the year 2021. They update, compared to their predecessors, with a new design that sports a matte finish to the rear that hides fingerprints after use. Galaxy S21 uses a plastic very similar to glass on the rear, both to the sight and to the touch, while behind the very resistant Gorilla Glass Victus. Galaxy S21 +instead it adopts the Victus both front and back and has a larger panel. Both Korean flagships make use of 120Hz Dynamic AMOLED 2X technology, with support for HDR, Full HD + resolution and diagonals of 6.2 “and 6.7” for the S21 and S21 + respectively. The batteries are 4,000mAh and 4,800mAh, both with support for 25W charging, reverse charging (also via wireless) and wireless charging. The dimensions are obviously also different between the two devices. The smallest has a surface of 151.7 x 71.2 mm and a thickness of 7.9 mm, with a weight of 172 grams (not many, for a high-end smartphone); the largest instead has dimensions of 161.5 x 75.6 x 7.8 mm and a weight of 200 grams. Three cameras: a 12 MP wide-angle, an ultra wide-angle 12 MP also and finally a 64MP telephoto lens with 3 × hybrid zoom. There is no storage expandability, with two versions on sale for both models, all with 8GB of RAM and 128 or 256GB of storage. There is also no support for S-Pen. Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra
The Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultrais the real top of the Samsung range from the beginning of 2021. It has the same hardware platform as the other models I have already told you about, but the display (also here an excellent quality 120Hz Dynamic AMOLED 2X) is wider due to the diagonal from 6.8 “. It supports Quad HD + resolution, HDR and the maximum brightness is 1500 nits. No smartphone had ever gone that far before this model! Great news, support for the S-Pen (which before was exclusive to the Galaxy Note series), but unfortunately it must be purchased separately. This variant of the device is 165.1 x 75.6 x 8.9 mm large and weighs 220 grams, integrating a 5000mAh battery with 25W fast charging support , reverse charging and wireless charging. The photographic sector has definitely improved compared to the immediately lower models in the Samsung range:in fact we have a stabilized wide angle combined with a 108MP sensor, two stabilized telephoto lenses (one of which is periscope) with 3 × and 10 × zoom (100 × in digital) and a 12 MP ultra wide angle.

Samsung Galaxy Note 20 / Note 20 Ultra
The Samsung Galaxy Note 20 is the best traditional smartphone that Samsung sells right now and is naturally characterized by the presence of the S-Pen. The 2020 model features the ability to perform operations without the tip touching the display, or even take photographs using the stylus to give input to the device. It adopts a design based on a front hole with a central position that encloses the front camera, with the display that can boast – thanks to this feature – a very high screen-to-frame ratio. For the Galaxy Note 20, Samsung has chosen a SuperAMOLED display from 60Hz with a 6.7-inch diagonal at a resolution of 2400 × 1080 pixels, support for the HDR10 + standard and Always-on display functionality. The pre-installed operating system is Android 10 with OneUI 2.5 and in Italy it is sold with the proprietary Exynos 990 Octa-core processor with maximum 2.73GHz. On the memory side we find 8GB of RAM and 256GB of non-expandable storage space, while the cameras are three: 12 Megapixel for the main one, a telephoto lens with 3 × 64 Megapixel hybrid zoom and finally a 12 Megapixel ultra wide-angle lens. The battery is 4,300mAh with 25W charging and support for wireless charging and reverse charging to charge external devices, while the fingerprint sensor is under-glass with ultrasonic technology. Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3 5G
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3 5Git is undoubtedly the best folding smartphone of the South Korean manufacturer and it is also the third generation of a series of the first foldable ones to be launched on the market ever. What characteristics does it possess? Meanwhile, you should know that it is equipped with an external 6.2-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X screen with a resolution of 832 x 2268 pixels and a refresh rate of 120 Hz. In addition to this, it also clearly has an internal screen that is of the Dynamic AMOLED 2X Infinity type. 7.6-inch Flex Display with a resolution of 1768 x 2208 pixels and a 120Hz refresh rate that folds. At the hardware level, on the other hand, it has a Snapdragon 888 which is nothing but an octa core CPU at 2.84 Ghz and Adreno 660 GPU, flanked by 12 GB of RAM and 256 or 512 GB of internal memory of the UFS 3.1 type. There is no lack of connectivity with support for 5G networks (SA, NSA, Sub6 / mmWave), 4G / LTE, WiFi 6 and Bluetooth. The fingerprint reader is instead placed on the side frame, in correspondence with the power / unlock key. The photographic sector brings a great novelty compared to previous generations with the 4 megapixel internal camera (f / 1.8) positioned below the screen, on the right half of the device. The external camera instead uses three 12 megapixel sensors, the main one with f / 1.8 aperture and optical stabilization, an ultra wide angle (FoV 123 degrees) and f / 2.2 aperture and a 2 × optical zoom with f / 2.4 aperture, 10 digital zoom. × and HDR10 + recording. Finally, the battery has a capacity of 4,400 mAh and is divided into two elements positioned in the two halves of the smartphone. If you want a broader overview of Samsung smartphones, connected to the official website of the Korean giant and “browse” all the smartphone models currently on the market. To view the details of each device, all you have to do is select its family (eg Galaxy S ) and click on its photo or name.
The Samsung site also allows you to buy smartphones directly online, but personally I do not recommend using it for such purposes as it has higher prices than those that can be found on Amazon or other online stores.
Furthermore, I remind you that you can buy Samsung smartphones at a good price (and / or in installments) by subscribing to a telephone offer with smartphone included . To find out which are the best smartphone offers currently available on the Italian market, connect to the SOSTariffe website and consult the table of offers that is proposed to you.
