What to do if the Pixel 5’s camera keeps crashing

In this troubleshooting guide, we will show you what to do if your Google Pixel 5 camera keeps crashing. Failing major apps and services are a sign of a firmware problem. However, do try to troubleshoot the app as it may be a minor app issue. Read on for more information.

There are times when a minor firmware issue can cause major applications and services to hang. In fact, that’s always the case if you’re having trouble using pre-installed apps like the camera.

As the owner, try to go through a basic troubleshooting procedure to determine if it is just a software related issue or if there is a problem with the camera sensor. So if you are one of the users with this problem, here is what you should do:

First solution: close the camera and open it again

It may be just a temporary problem or a minor glitch in the app. So the first thing you need to do is force close the camera and then open it again.

  1. Just swipe up from the bottom of the screen and stop in the middle.
  2. Now slide the camera up to close it. If you want, you can also close all applications running in the background.

After that, open the camera and see if it still fails. If so, move on to the next solution.

Second solution: Force restart your Pixel 5

If the first method didn’t work, you need to refresh your phone memory and reload all services. It may just be due to a fairly minor firmware glitch, especially if it happened out of nowhere for no apparent reason.

  1. Just press and hold the Power key for 8 seconds. It will make your phone turn off and then turn on again.
  2. Once the Google logo is displayed, release the power key and wait until the boot process is finished.

After the reboot, open the camera to see if the problem is fixed.

Third solution: run your phone in safe mode

If the force restart didn’t fix the problem either, the next thing to do is find out if it’s caused by third-party apps and services. You can do this by restarting your phone in safe mode to temporarily disable all third-party apps. This is how you do it:

  1. Hold down the power key for a couple of seconds.
  2. Press and hold the Shut down option until a dialog box appears.
  3. Tap OK to restart your Pixel 5 in safe mode.

While in safe mode, open the camera to see if it fails. If not, it means that one or some of the apps you installed are causing the problem. Find that app and uninstall it.

However, if the problem continues, try the next solution.

Fourth solution: clear cache and camera data

After performing the above solutions and your Pixel 5’s camera still crashes, it’s time to reset the app. Resetting an application means clearing its cache and data. If it’s just a problem with the app, this procedure should be able to fix it. This is how you do it:

  1. Open the app drawer and find the camera app.
  2. Press and hold its icon until the menu appears.
  3. Tap the App Information icon.
  4. Touch storage and cache.
  5. First tap clear cache, then tap Clear storage and tap OK to confirm.

After doing that, start the camera again to see if the problem is fixed.

Fifth solution: check for a new firmware update

At this point, if the problem is still not fixed, it may be a firmware issue. Try to check if there is a new update available for your device. If it’s a widespread problem, Google will fix it with an update.

  1. To check for an update, start Settings.
  2. Scroll down and tap System.
  3. Touch Advanced.
  4. Now tap on System Update.

If an update is available, download and install it. And after that, start the camera to see if it still crashes.

Sixth solution: factory reset your Pixel 5

After performing the above solutions and the camera still crashes, your last resort will be a factory reset. Whenever it’s a software problem, a reboot will fix it. However, be sure to create a backup of your important files and data. When you’re ready, follow these steps to reset your Pixel 5:

  1. Launch the Settings app.
  2. Scroll down and tap System.
  3. Touch Advanced.
  4. Touch Reset options and then touch Clear all data.
  5. Touch Clear all data in the lower right corner of the screen. If necessary, enter your PIN, pattern, or password.
  6. To erase all data from your phone’s internal storage, tap Erase all data.

After the reboot, set up your phone as a new device.

If the camera still fails after that, it’s time to get it checked. Otherwise it should work normally now.

And that’s what you should do if your Google Pixel 5 camera keeps crashing. We hope this simple troubleshooting guide has been helpful to you.
