What time should children go to bed to perform at school?

Sleep is very important for child development. Not only does it allow the body to rest and replenish energy, but it also plays a fundamental role in the development of children since growth hormone is activated while they sleep. Sleep also participates in other metabolic processes, such as the regulation of body weight, while helping to build new neural connections between both hemispheres and strengthen existing ones, which stimulates the ability to learn.

A study conducted at the University of Notre Dame found that sleep also helps foster children’s creativity, while stimulating the production of new ideas. As if that were not enough, while children sleep, their brain sets in motion a mechanism by which it releases toxic substances from daytime metabolism, which improves neural health, promotes mental organization and enhances cognitive development.

This explains why children need to get a good night’s rest in order to perform at school the next day. However, not all little ones need the same amount of sleep to be at full capacity the next morning as this depends on their sleep and rest needs, as well as their circadian rhythm and, obviously, their age.

The time children have to go to bed to go to school, according to their age

As a general rule, children up to three years of age need an average of 12 to 14 hours of sleep. However, as they get older they need less and less sleep. In fact, for 4-year-olds the usual is that night rest is reduced to about 11 or 13 hours and for 6 years to 10 hours. However, to avoid too abrupt changes from one year to the next, it is best that only fifteen minutes of sleep are suppressed each school year compared to the previous one.

5 years

At this age, children should sleep an average of 12 hours, so if they get up at 6:00 a.m. they should go to bed at approximately 6:45 p.m. If they get up at 7:00 a.m. they can go to bed a little later, around 7:30 p.m. This way they can rest well and be more active the next day.

6 years

By age 6, children can get a good night’s rest with just 11-10 hours of sleep. However, to prevent them from not getting enough rest, if they get up at 6:00 they should go to bed at 19:00. On the other hand, if they can get up a little later, at 7:00 for example, then they can also go to bed a little later, at 20:00.

7 years

When children turn 7 years old they start to feel “older” and it is normal for them to want to go to bed later. However, allowing them to go to bed later can lead to poor sleep and poor performance the next day at school. At this age, the usual thing is that if the little ones get up at 6:00 they go to bed at 19:15.

Eight years

With 8 years, children need fewer hours to rest at night, so if during the week they must get up at 6:00 to go to school, they can go to bed at 19:30. If they get up a little later, at 7:00, then they can also go to bed later, around 20:30.

9 years

At this age, children can sleep an average of 10 hours and perform at maximum capacity the next day, but it is still important that they have a good night’s sleep. For example, if they get up at 6:00, they can go to bed around 7:30 p.m., but if they wake up later, at 7:00 they will have to go to bed at 8:45 p.m. to get a good rest.

10 years

10-year-olds have a much more active life and will most likely want to go to bed later so they can talk to their friends longer or finish watching the movie they started. However, at this age it is important that children sleep at least 10 hours a day. Therefore, if they get up at 6:00, they must go to bed at 20:00. If they can get up a little later, around 7:00, they can go to bed at 9:00 p.m.

11 years

By the time children turn 11, they are likely to require their parents to go to bed later since, after all, they are quite “older”. However, this does not mean that they do not need to rest at night. Therefore, if they get up at 6:00, the ideal would be for them to go to bed at 8:15 p.m. and if they wake up at 7:00, they should not go to sleep later than 9:15 p.m.

12 years

Many parents allow their 12-year-olds to stay up until everyone at home goes to bed. However, it is important to bear in mind that at this age children still need more hours of sleep than adults, so if they get up at 6:00 they should go to bed at approximately 20:15. They can only go to bed at 9:15 p.m. if they wake up later, around 7:00 a.m.
