What is the role of the nurse for a cancer patient?

Not just a reference in the care of cancer patients. The nurse is also a key figure in supporting them and their caregivers

The cancer nurse plays a very important role in the path of care and assistance of people with cancer . It is present in all phases of assistance.

For example, for patients who need to undergo chemotherapy , the nurse is not only the figure who prepares and administers the treatment, verifying that everything goes correctly, but more often than not he is also the one who explains the therapeutic program , prepares for the  effects. collateral , educates on dietary regimes and behaviors to adopt to reduce their impact.

It is almost always the nurse who prepares the patient for surgery by explaining what its consequences will be, addressing the fears that arise from the operation and working to make the new post-operative condition as acceptable as possible.

The human support , moral , psychological to the patient and family, in fact, is among the main tasks of the nurse oncology. Beyond the duties, however, it is the constant proximity to patients that makes the cancer nurses a little special. They are aware of the impact of cancer on patients’ lives, of the suffering caused by the disease. They are used to  listening to the sick , to sharing their fears and anxieties , their  weaknesses , their uncertainties , but also their joys . This makes them an indispensable point of reference for the patient and for families.

Human and moral support, to the sick person and to the family is therefore one of the main duties of the cancer nurse, but the role of the psychologist is still more and aims to work on different, deeper levels and not only related to the disease event.
