What is the Davos Forum

Coinciding with the start of the 50th edition of the World Economic Forum (WEF), also known as the Davos Forum , we will explain what it is and how it has become an event in which power is concentrated and attempted Find solutions to our global problems.

Let’s start by seeing where it is celebrated . Davos is a Swiss city surrounded by mountains, where the World Economic Forum (WEF) takes place , a meeting attended annually by international leaders in politics, business, culture and the media.

It began in 1971 on the initiative of Klaus M. Schwab , a professor at the University of Geneva (Switzerland) , and intended to be a non-profit, independent, impartial and not linked to specific interests meeting point .

The first edition brought together 444 representatives and business management experts in Davos to emulate American fashion practices then

Currently, its objective is to build a better world involving precisely the people who have the power to change the world , which is why political leaders, business magnates and influential people congregate annually worldwide in order to find solutions to the main challenges that has humanity .

In this 2020 , the topics that will be put on the table are climate change , sustainability and inequality .

The Davos Forum published its first manifesto in 1973 , and has now renewed it by setting a single goal , to build a more sustainable and inclusive world.

This new manifesto also highlights the role of companies in the new Industrial Revolution that we are going through and that will require a profound digital transformation in our organizations.

In the words of its founder and president, Klaus M. Schwab , efforts to limit global warming to 1.5 ° C are proving insufficient , so we are at a critical moment and it is necessary to develop plans and tools for Companies and governments take action.

In this 2020 edition, some 3,000 participants from around the world will be brought together with the purpose of moving towards the Paris Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with the help of technological development and business governance tools .

Throughout the 4 days in which the forum is divided, consisting of 150 work sessions , more than 600 spokespersons located at the highest levels of leadership will participate.

The challenges that will be addressed this year are divided into 6 areas :

  1. Climate crisis
  2. Inclusive economy
  3. Digital transformation
  4. Training of workers for future scenarios
  5. Global Conflict Resolution
  6. Business models for the new Industrial Revolution

This new message focused on sustainability has led event organizers to worry that it is (something) more responsible with the environment , achieving the ISO 20121 certification of sustainable events and trying to make it carbon neutral .

For this , priority has been given to local suppliers of locally sourced food, meat consumption is reduced, renewable energy use is encouraged, less sustainable materials are reduced, and electric mobility is encouraged.

In the section invited to the forum , there are many who arouse the media interest : the president of the United States , Donald Trump , his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin , and Sanna Marin , prime minister of Finland , who at 34 is the most Young man in the world to hold that position. On the Spanish side, the president of the government, Pedro Sánchez , and the vice president of Economic Affairs, Nadia Calviño will attend .

Regarding businessmen and senior executives we find James Dimon (JP Morgan) , Sheryl Sandberg (Facebook) , Axel Weber (UBS) or Uber’s boss , Dara Khosrowshahi .

Also attending are leaders of relevant non-governmental organizations and the most prominent cultural and social leaders , such as Swedish activist Greta Thunberg , former US vice president Al Gore and anthropologist Jane Goodall .

But this event not only attracts powerful guests, since the protests that have taken place in Davos and its surroundings are also famous .

And this forum is not well seen by everyone . Until the financial collapse of 2008, attending Davos was considered essential.

But critics suggest that it is a symbol of the global elite , and that some of the representatives who attend were responsible for the crises we have suffered .

Criticisms arise about the inequality it fosters , even among attendees since not everyone has the same privileges .

It is also relevant to note that the summit is dominated by men , although the organizers are working to correct this announced fact by a 24% participation of women by 2020, being in 2019 of 22%, compared to 17% in 2015. Perhaps it is a growth quite modest to achieve the much needed gender equality …

We would like to conclude by highlighting that, despite the issues in which the Davos Forum has to improve , many important ideas have come out of this event , such as the North American Free Trade Agreement (The Northern American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) , signed between the United States, Canada and Mexico , the restoration of relations in 1988 between Turkey and Greece , or in 2000 , the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI) that managed to launch programs to immunize To millions of children.
