What is the computer bus and what is it for? – Characteristics, parts and types?

In this article we are going to explain what it is and what it is for and what it is for a computer bus, what are its characteristics, its parts and the types that exist. Thanks to the development of these, today you can have mobiles and computers with large storage capacities and simple to run.

A bus is the circuit that is printed on the boards of our devices. When buying an electronic device it is important to make sure and check what type of plate it has and to know which are the best plates.

A computer bus is made up of cables or tracks, resistors that transfer electrical energy and capacitors that are responsible for storing said energy.

Thanks to them it is possible to communicate between the device’s microprocessor with its memory and with the input and output ports. Some have a data transfer of one bit at a time while there are others that can support up to 8 bits transfer simultaneously.

How a computer bus works and what are its parts

The operation is basically the transfer of electrical signals through the conductors and are received by another component with which it works together.

They can conduct digitized signals and define their capacity according to the number of repetitions they can do in a given time with an inversely proportional relationship to each other.

The components that a computer bus has are the following:

  • Cables that, as we mentioned at the beginning, are responsible for transmitting the electricity necessary to function
  • Plate, where all the other printed components are located. It is the driver that must deliver the data between the different components. It is also known as the motherboard and is the operations center of your device.
  • Resistors offer resistance by analyzing the transmission that exists between two points of electrical frequency, supplying the exact amount of energy necessary to carry out each process.
  • Capacitors. They store energy and transmit it to the necessary points at the right time. Work passively.

What type of computer bus exists

As we anticipated at the beginning, there are different types or generations of computer buses that depend on the era in which they were designed. Broadly speaking, they are:

First generation buses

It was developed in the 70s and 80s. They were made up of two types of buses, one of them was destined for memory and the other type were those that surrounded it.

Second generation bus

Here the quality was improved in terms of faster response speed to electrical impulses for a given signal. They developed between the 90s and the beginning of the 21st century. The problem with them is that it uses too much CPU resources to function.

Third generation bus

They are the ones we currently use and their main characteristic is that it allows point-to-point connections, reducing the number of connections and streamlining the process, since it fragments the routes or tracks where the data travels.

Classification according to computer bus

Parallel bus

A parallel bus is one that is dedicated to transmitting all the data of one bit at a time. Their frequency is small, but they can send a large amount of data.

Its connections are complex so its response time to an electrical impulse, command or signal that we make can be a bit slow. They are used in the first and second generation buses.

Serial bus

This bus can transmit up to bit by bit . They are currently used for hard drives due to their efficiency in transmitting information from one point to another.

Of control

It is a part of the parallel buses and they take care of the data that is needed to communicate. It controls the data bus and the address bus.

Of data

They move bits randomly and require large amounts of electricity to exchange data directly with the CPU.

Of direction

It has a number to assign to a memory or memory cell within the main one. It can work directly with the microprocessor.

Multiplexed

They are responsible for transmitting electricity sometimes to an address bus and sometimes to data, but they never do it at the same time.

We hope this guide on computer buses has been useful to you. If you have questions, you can leave it in the comments so that we can help you.
