What is inclusive education?

Have you heard the expression “inclusive education”? This is a topic that is widely discussed today. After all, the provision of education must be available to all citizens, regardless of social, physical or cultural differences.

What is inclusive education? 

In a simple way, inclusive education is the teaching process that understands individuals globally and seeks to reduce inequalities within a group, avoiding discrimination. This is a broad movement, which recognizes the learning capacity of each child, teenager or adult.

The idea started to be discussed more strongly in 1998, during a seminar in India and, since then, it has been implemented in several institutions around the world.

Here in Brazil, for example, the Law of Guidelines and Bases explains that basic education is the right of any citizen. This includes people with differences in:

  • age;
  • sex;
  • ethnicity;
  • language;
  • disability / disability;
  • social class;
  • health condition.

How does inclusive education work? 

People with different needs need differentiated service. That is why the Brazilian government has created specialized institutions over the years, such as the Benjamin Constant Institute (aimed at blind people) and the National Institute for the Education of the Deaf.

Although these spaces are important for society, they did not favor inclusion. On the contrary, they separated people into groups: different from normal ones. Thus, inclusive education comes to unite citizens, providing conditions for everyone to learn in the same space.

However, for the process to work, it is necessary to train professionals involved in the area of ​​education, create new teaching methodologies and adapt the structure of schools and universities. Thus, differences are understood and valued, and all students learn together, in a dynamic process.

What is the difference between inclusive education and special education 

Inclusive education, as you saw in the previous topic, is developed within a regular teaching environment, where any student is welcome. What happens is that the space undergoes adaptations in order to deal equally with the particular variations of each individual.

Special education, in turn, is that geared to the specific learning of people who have some limitations, whether physical or psychological. In general, it is applied in its own spaces, such as the institutes we mentioned earlier. In other words, it does not provide a diversified environment, nor an exchange of multiple experiences.

Why is it important to promote inclusion in education? 

The inclusion process, especially in childhood, helps the individual to consciously reflect on society. This teaches him to be more tolerant, to help others, to understand that each one learns at his own pace, to live with other social realities, among others.

Inclusive education also takes into account the participation of the family and health professionals within the school environment, generating a broad interaction between all educational agents. Through this collaboration, the population as a whole develops.
