Although it is celebrated more in the United States than here, Halloween has also become a very popular date in Brazil. Creative costumes, scary decorations, the famous “trick or treat” game… there are several ways to enjoy this moment. And why not include your pets in this moment ?
Yes, it is possible to celebrate Halloween with your pets, you just need to know how to do it in a way that is fun and safe for everyone. Tais Motta Fernandes, product manager at Avert Saúde Animal, has prepared some tips to ensure a pet-friendly celebration this Halloween:
Themed fantasy
Owners can include their dogs as part of the party by dressing them up in costumes. However, it is important to choose outfits that are comfortable and safe, avoiding items that could restrict the pets’ movements.
Pumpkin, bat or superhero costumes are always a great choice. How about having a photo shoot to record the fun?
Safe decoration
To take photos with your pets, it’s a good idea to decorate your home with typical Halloween items. However, don’t forget to avoid decorations that are too small and could be swallowed or toxic. And, if you have lights, place them in places that dogs can’t reach to chew on.
Participation in “Trick or Treat”
One of the most fun Halloween traditions is the famous “trick or treating”. You can include your dogs in this game by offering them different treats.
The owner can put a package in their pocket and, when the children come asking for candy, offer a functional, natural treat to the dog. This is a great way to ensure that everyone participates in the game!
Games
Halloween games and activities with pets can be really fun. One idea is to hide treats around the house for your pets to find, like a treasure hunt.
Be careful with sweets
Dog owners should be aware that many Halloween treats can pose health risks to dogs. Chocolate, grapes, and xylitol (a common sweetener), for example, are toxic to dogs. When handing out candy, it is important to be careful to keep it out of reach of dogs, and to ensure that visitors do the same.
Pet meeting
For those who know other dog owners who are also in the Halloween spirit, organizing a get-together can be a great idea. A walk around the neighborhood with all the dogs in costume provides a wonderful opportunity to socialize and celebrate the holiday.
