A person can experience changes in terms of their potential and capacity when doing daily activities. There are times when a person’s potential and capacity to work decreases. There are also times when, it is static or fixed. This changing potential and capacity is more due to a change in motivation .

Therefore, efforts to foster employee motivation are very important. Coaching work motivation is expected to help maintain and improve the physical condition, intellect and mentality of someone in their activities, both in companies or organizations.

What is motivation?

Motivation itself can be interpreted as a form of encouragement that arises in a person to do something with a particular goal. An individual can be motivated by a number of ways.

Can come from within oneself, can also come from outside himself. Although the origin of the motivation is different, but both of them can still affect the person’s behavior and work performance.

In a company or organization, an employee might work better than another employee. This is due to the difference in motivation from one employee to another, despite the different initial potential.

To overcome this, a company leader needs to know the work motivation of the employees below him. That way, the company can encourage employees to work better.

Types of motivations

Basically, work motivation provided by companies to their employees can take many forms. Types of employee work motivation for example can be through (1) incentives; (2) carrot and stick approach;  (3) humanitarian approach; (4) supervision; (5) coaching discipline.

The following is an explanation of each type of motivation mentioned above:

(1) incentives

Incentives are a form of stimulation that can make someone more passionate and productive. Incentives as work motivation are carried out by regulating conditions and situations to improve employee work motives. As:

  • material incentives, such as providing additional overtime pay, salaries, wages or daily necessities.
  • immaterial incentives, for example granting promotions, charter, awards and others.

(2) carrot and stick approach

This motivational principle is carried out in the form of rewards and punishment. So, for employees who have shown good activity or creativity, they are given gifts or rewards . Conversely, if the employee shows a decrease in work activities, then he is given a kind of punishment or punishment .

This approach to motivation is quite popular in corporate leadership. This approach is commonly known as the carrot and stick approach or the carrot and stick approach.

(3) humanitarian approach

This humanitarian approach is intended to be done by making a more familiar approach. Thus, formal communication in relationships between individuals can be more informal.

This form of humanitarian approach is a combination of effective approaches. Because, in the management there is a hierarchy and level of femininity that must be recognized and obeyed by each official and staff.

(4) supervision

This supervision is a sub-system form of management activities. The principle is an effort to explore, utilize, and develop human resources by providing counseling guidance, discussion interviews, staff meetings, briefings and the like.

This supervision is usually done by direct control from superiors. For example, the form of work visits in the field or commonly known as sudden inspection or sudden inspection or on the spot check .

(5) discipline guidance

The aim of this discipline development is to ensure that the spirit of discipline can be embedded in each employee. That is, there is a maturity of the learning process and awareness to receive power and control from superiors and companies. The concept of discipline can also be done in several ways, such as:

  • fostering discipline in an authority manner, this is done by creating discipline by way of giving orders which must be carried out without alternative decisions.
  • free discipline formation ( anarchi), is a form of discipline in which subordinates can determine the form of discipline they want, while the superiors accept whatever the will of their subordinates.
  • democratic discipline development, is a form of disciplining that is done by taking into account the conditions and situations of subordinates. However, it still does not abandon the principle of legality that applies to companies and countries.

Thus the types of employee work motivation that can be used as a reference, both for learning in schools and to be practiced directly in companies or organizations.
