Shri Ram’s influence in India’s freedom movement: Ramayana written by Guru Govind Singh in Gurmukhi script proved to be a guide for the activists of that time! VVS Iyer, who led the freedom movement in South India, writes ‘A Study of Kamb Ramayan’ in prison and inspires revolutionaries along with him as well.

Mahatma Gandhi used to talk about Ram and Ram Rajya in his many speeches. Gandhiji took a 24-day foot march from Sabarmati Ashram near Dandi village near Ahmedabad on March 12, 1930, which is also known as Salt March, Dandi Satyagraha. Gandhiji sang ‘Raghupati Raghav Rajaram, Petit Holiness Sitaram’ bhajan many times even during this walking tour.

Mahatma Gandhi writes in his autobiography ‘My Experiments with Truth’, Tulsidas’s Ramayana is for me the greatest book in religious literature. India’s freedom fighter and social activist Acharya Vinoba Bhave calls the Ramayana a national epic. He considered the Ramayana to be the focal point of the organization of India. Similarly, Swami Vivekananda used to quote from Ramayana many times in his statements. He himself was influenced by Shriram’s character. Ram and Ramayana were the inspiration for many freedom fighters like Lokmanya Tilak, Bhagini Nivedita, Madanlal Dhingra.

The Ram Katha is also an extract of unity in India’s diversity: There is no part of India where the name and thought of Shri Rama is not reached. Ramayana was originally written in Sanskrit by sage Valmiki and there are many versions of it in Sanskrit like Vashistha Ramayana, Agastya Ramayana, Adhyatma Ramayana etc. If we talk about Indian languages, 12th century poet Kamban Tamil Kamb Ramayana writes in Tamil Nadu.

Saptakand Ramayana Madhava Kandali in 14th century in Assam, Kritibas Ojha Bengali Kritivasi Ramayana in 15th century, Goswami Tulsidas ji Ramcharitmanas in 16th century in Awadh, Uttar Pradesh, Sant Eknath Ramcharitmanas from 16th century Marathi Bhavartha Ramayana, Poet Premanand Swami Tulsidas ji Impressed, Tulsi Ramayana is written in Gujarati in the 17th century.

If we talk about Karnataka, in Kannada we find Kumudendu Ramayana (which is the Jain version) written in the 13th century and Kumara- Valmiki Torve Ramayana in the 16th century. The tradition of Ramayana is very old in Odisha too. Odia Dandi Ramayana or Jagmohan Ramayana Barram Das writes in the 14th century. ! Apart from this, Ramayana has been recited and read for years in Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Goa, Kerala, Manipur and other provinces.

The Ramayana has been practiced for many years through stories from house to house even before it was written in many Indian languages. Apart from this, Buddha and Jain pantheon also have their own versions of Ramayana. Lord Rama is not only an inspiration for the people of India, but also for the people of Central and South Asia. Shri Rama has been speaking abroad for thousands of years. Ramayana is written and in art in China, Japan, Indonesia, Thailand, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Nepal and many more countries.

The ideal for all is Sri Rama: As a son, when King Dasaratha gave Shri Rama 14 years of exile at the behest of Mother Kaikeyi, Shri Rama did not think even once and obeyed the order. As a brother, Shri Rama loved all his brothers Lakshmana, Bharata and Shatrughan. Even when there was talk of giving them exile and ruling over Bharat, even then Rama was happy that Bharat would rule as king. Laxman was just like the shadow of Shri Rama. The two never left each other. Even today, in many houses, the brothers are named Ram-Laxman.

As a husband, Shri Rama practiced all his religions. It was his affection and adherence to religion to Mata Sita who took him to Lanka thousands of kilometers away in search of him, Mata Sita and Shri Ram are ideal for Indian couples. Shri Ram’s moral conduct, truth, sacrifice, patience, compassion, valor inspires every Indian.
