UMIDIGI Bison Pro Review

Today we bring you the analysis of a smartphone something more special than usual, we are talking about the UMIDIGI Bison Pro. If what you need is a terminal that resists blows, dirt and water , due to your type of work, it will be the one.

Competing with the Caterpillar and the Hammer Iron, this terminal offers a wide range of extras such as triple rear camera, NFC, barometer, thermometer or compass ideal for jobs in the field, industry or adventurers. With the maximum protection IP69K covered with rubber and 5000 mAh we will not even get lost in the jungle. Do you want to see what this terminal is capable of? Well let’s get started!

But first, we thank UMIDIGI for trusting us for giving us this terminal for analysis.

UMIDIGI Bison Pro technical characteristics

The UMIDIGI Bison Pro will arrive in a rather striking box in bright yellow and a little flatter and wider than usual. We only see the name of the brand and the model’s label on the external faces. So we extract the upper cover to find the terminal wrapped in a bag placed on a mold, and next to it the rest of the accessories.

The bundle in this case will have the following elements:

  • UMIDIGI Bison ProSmartphone
  • 18W charger with European plug
  • USB Type-C charging and data cable
  • Instruction manual and warranty
  • Pre-installed plastic screen protector

Designed and built to withstand everything

The UMIDIGI Bison Pro puts aside the premium and delicate materials of many terminals on the market to offer us something different, designed to withstand all kinds of conditions . Well, in short, it is a terminal designed for use in physical jobs such as masonry or industry, or for adventure sports. Therefore, its construction ensures IP69K protection , the highest in its range with resistance to water and dust at high temperatures and pressure. Likewise, it is MIL-STC-810G certified , offering resistance to shocks and other tests of this entity.

It is made from plastic materials with a rugged finish to provide us with a very strong casing on the back and reinforced corners to improve resistance. For this reason, despite having a somewhat tighter 6.3 ”screen, it measures 165 mm long, 79.6 mm wide and 12.7 mm thick , weighing no less than 265 g. It is therefore a fairly large terminal and not so comfortable to carry in your pocket , but it is a bit the price to pay for such protection, and in fact some CATs are even larger.

Starting with the screen area, we have a panel protected with Gorilla Glass and also a pre-installed protector to avoid scratches. The use space is notably lower than average, with a tight 75% having large frames all around it in order to preserve it from fatal blows. The selfie camera uses a fairly large drop-type notch , while the edges will be the typical 2.5D, finished in a metallic border all around. We do not forget the opening for the call speaker on the upper edge, which will be noticeable a little more than usual.

If we turn the UMIDIGI Bison Pro we find a fairly robust rear area, finished in rough plastic that provides the best possible grip for use with gloves, wet or cold hands. In addition, two ridged areas on the edges will increase the firmness of the grip. A central band in smooth plastic will allow us to see the logo and name of the brand in a chrome finish. Meanwhile, a hard plastic leg on the bottom edge will serve as the first support of the mobile on the ground, and incidentally, it is a slot to hang a ribbon or rope.

We do not end with this area, since it will be where the only speaker available in the terminal has been placed . Again, it is a location designed to improve the resistance of the frames, with a large hole waterproofed with an inner membrane. We go to the upper corner where a large panel of cameras similar to that of the Xiaomi 10T has been placed as it has a prominent main sensor, and under it the other two sensors, Dual LED flash and temperature sensor . This panel will be slightly out of the body and protected by glass and aluminum edges. Next to the panel, three small holes allow the barometer to obtain data from the outside environment.

We continue the aesthetic analysis going to the sides, in which a combination of aluminum has been used for the sides and a plastic cover for the upper and lower corners and edges . These will be more or less rounded and fixed by means of three Torx screws not very difficult to extract the truth. As for the connections, we start with a 3.5 mm Jack for the upper edge, and the corresponding USB Type-C for charging and data for the lower edge. It is accompanied by a microphone for calls as usual.

On the right side we have the individual buttons for volume up and down and the button for power or lock. The truth is that they are too cute , and just by grabbing the mobile we will be pressing them without wanting to. A little further down we have an extra button that we can configure from the system , for example, to execute functions such as an underwater camera, screen capture or internal.

We go to the right side where we have another of these configurable buttons with three more functions such as thermometer, open Zello, open SOS, etc. In the upper half we have the fingerprint sensor , well located, although for someone left-handed like a server, the truth is that it is especially comfortable. Finally, a little higher we will have the tray for SIM and MicroSD. It is not a removable tray as such, but we must put something in the upper slot to remove the lid, which is quite hard to prevent the entry of water. Therefore, be careful not to use too much force and break it.

IPS screen and single speaker

We now analyze the screen of the UMIDIGI Bison Pro , which is still a mid-range to adjust the price of the product. You can see that technology has advanced a lot in this type of device, because for less than 150 euros we already have a good panel in terms of resolution and color representation.

The manufacturer has opted for an IPS-type LCD panel as denoted by its less tight frames and with a slight shadow under them typical of these panels. It has a diagonal of 6.3 inches and a 19.5: 9 format that will be quite good for consuming multimedia content and taking photos. The resolution is 1080 x 2340p , that is, FHD +, so not bad on this model with 409 dpi density .

Not much more information about it is provided, but we know that it is multi-touch and capacitive, as is normal, and the Gorilla Glass protection should ensure good resistance. A detail that somehow indicates that it is a cheaper terminal is the touch of it, sounding a bit hollow when we touch it . In any case, it doesn’t sink or anything like that . Color reproduction is quite good, with excellent sharpness due to the high resolution and sufficient maximum brightness to handle well outdoors with the sun on.

We also take advantage of this section to talk about the only equipped speaker , which offers us good performance in detail and volume. The frequency balance is not as polished as the general public terminals , and we feel the treble more strongly, thus generating a more strident sound at maximum volume, getting to distort a bit.

The location at the back with that large opening is not seen as an advantage in terms of use, because if we support the terminal on a soft surface like a sofa we will lose a lot of audio power. A slightly more closed grille would improve the presence of bass, but in the end it is still a slightly more secondary section of this terminal and we cannot compare it with the dual speaker models. The triple microphone system will offer good call and recording performance, with good noise cancellation.

Security systems

We now continue with the security section of the UMIDIGI Bison Pro in which we can use both facial recognition and fingerprint sensor , both at a good level typical of its range.

The smell sensor will be located on the left side, a not very common location, since it is normal to see it on the right side and the lower half. It seems as if the designer is left-handed, as this location will be really good for the thumb. As it is not too high, it will also be quite well placed for right-handers , having to use the index finger to unlock. Its performance is good in terms of hit rate, although it feels a bit slow compared to the high level that access / mid-range terminals currently have.

The facial recognition system has a closed eyes detector and accessories to prevent accidental unlocking. Android 11’s own system is used with some variations, so its operation is good as long as we are not in darkness or against the light . As with the fingerprint sensor, it is not instantaneous, although it does feel slightly faster than this, and its use is highly recommended.

Internal hardware and performance

The internal hardware configuration of the UMIDIGI Bison Pro will be at a somewhat lower level than the Redmi 9 or the POCO M3, that is, within an access or medium / low range. The SoC consists of a MediaTek Helio G80 , rival to the Snapdragon 665, albeit a bit below it. This 2020 CPU features 8-core 64-bit ARM architecture and a 12nm manufacturing process. It has 2 Cortex A75 at 2.0 GHz and 6 Cortex A55 at 1.8 GHz .

Along with it we have an ARM Mali-G52 GPU specification 2EEMC2 , rival of Qualcomm’s Adreno 616 and powerful enough to run most Android games with good fluency and 1080p resolution. UMIDIGI uses its own liquid cooling system for this SoC that ensures excellent temperatures at all times, considering its use in adverse conditions with high humidity and heat.

Memory and storage configuration consists of 4 or 8 GB of 1800 MHz LPDDR4X RAM on Dual Channel . And next to it, a storage of 128 GB of type UFS 2.1 with capacity of expansion through MicroSD . This package is quite interesting, especially in terms of storage, as it surpasses most access terminals. In terms of performance, this package will be good enough for its intended audience, ensuring a completely fluid system.

Through the benchmarks we see that the terminal meets expectations, and has well adjusted and optimized hardware. The 3DMark Wild Life test is still too big for him, but the good scores at 1080p show that he will have no problem with 3D applications and system handling.

Connectivity and features designed for adventurers

The connectivity section is one of the strongest of this UMIDIGI Bison Pro for its price range, surpassing practically all similar models.

The basic package is already at a very good level with Wi-Fi 5 Dual Band at 2.4 and 5 GHz, compatible with Wi-Fi Direct and Wi-Fi Display, and Bluetooth 4.2 compatible with A2DP and HID. To this is added geographic positioning through GPS, A-GPS, GLONASS and Galileo , ensuring its operation on all continents. An unusual aspect in its category is having NFC for mobile payment, great detail for its part.

Another less common package has been installed in most terminals, consisting of a Barometer, Thermometer, Compass and even the almost forgotten FM Radio. It is assumed that it will also have a gyroscope, accelerometer and an ambient light sensor for the screen. Curiously, it does not have infrared , which would complete the pack.

With these extra sensors we can measure the environmental humidity and wind , as well as the body temperature or of any object by bringing the sensor located on the camera panel closer to the element in question. We already find pre-installed applications in the system for these tasks. The strange thing is that in the object and body temperature measurement mode the results do not coincide. This means either that the sensor is not entirely reliable, or that the application is not well optimized.

The application pack of exclusive applications for this UMIDIGI Bison Pro is located in the ToolBox folder . We have an App to measure sound (with the microphone), flashlight, water drop level (gyroscope), measuring ruler (camera), plumb bob (gyroscope), angle carrier, compass, barometer, step meter or thermometer. Quite peculiar all of them, and useful to practice our skills with the terminal and get us out of a trouble at work. Many of them have not been translated into Spanish, or still have parts in English , something that the manufacturer should work on to polish the interface.

Factory Android 11 system

The UMIDIGI Bison Pro has the Android 11 operating system with a practically stock interface and experience in terms of menus and graphic presentation. In addition, we will have all the Google services in full already installed , a factor that must be taken into account and that ensures the installation of any Google Play App.

The default configuration of the layer means that we have to use gestures for navigation, as it does not have a lower button panel, but it can easily be modified from the interface . These gestures will be typical for Android to go backwards by dragging to the right, or close the application by dragging upwards. In the visual style the absence of layers as worked as MIUI, OxygenOS or One UI is noted, being below them in user experience and customization capacity.

UMIDIGI has done its bit by adding a game mode or its own voice assistant called Zello, which we will use after registering with an account. Well, it doesn’t have much to do with Google Assistant, but it’s a bonus to keep in mind. We have already seen the vault of applications that the brand has included to take advantage of the functionality of the implemented sensors, which are more or less precise, they can be useful.

Another outstanding function will be to be able to customize the two extra buttons located on the sides of the terminal. Accessing the section dedicated to these from the options, we have a total of three types of access for each button, corresponding to a single click, double click and long press . We will do the same with the two buttons, having up to 8 functions available.

Extraordinary autonomy

This UMIDIGI Bison Pro equips a 5000 mAh Lithium Polymer battery with a fast charge of 18W. It will be an impressive capacity for the hardware we have, and it guarantees us an enormous amount of hours of screen and terminal use. The included charger will also be 18W, not being a great fast charge, although enough for having to visit our nightstand a little.

With normal use of the terminal with SIM card and combined use of Wi-Fi and 4G, we have had no problems holding out for a full 3 days . In fact, we have carried out all the tests with a single charge, so those 5000 mAh will allow us to make a demanding use of the terminal, arriving with enough battery on the second day.

Cameras and performance

Even with everything that the UMIDIGI Bison Pro has offered us so far , it still has room to give us nothing less than three rear cameras and a good resolution front sensor. Let’s see how these behave.

Bring sensors

  • Main sensor: it is a Sony Exmor with a resolution of 48 MP. It has a CMOS type lens with a 1.80 focal aperture and a 0.80 µm pixel size. It has a digital stabilizer and laser autofocus, but no optical stabilization. It will be able to record at a resolution of 1080p @ 60 FPS.
  • Wide Angle Sensor: the brand is not specified for this, offering a resolution of 16 MP and a field of view of 117 or with an ISOCELL lens type
  • Macro Sensor: The package comes complete with a typical 5 MP macro type sensor for photos from less than 2.5 cm away.

The performance of the cameras came to surprise us, behaving better than we expected in this terminal . And starting with the main sensor, it offers us excellent performance in both close and medium and short distance photos, providing a good natural exposure if we do not use HDR or AI mode. The default mode will be 12 MP, the best balance between image quality and weight.

If we shoot in AI mode, the results are also quite good, giving us a more attractive photo with more saturated colors. Obviously we will lose a bit of naturalness, but it is quite good for landscapes and photos to indoor meals. The HDR will give us a better result on certain occasions , so we can choose one of the two functions and then choose the one we like the most. In backlit photos or where there is light and shadow, it will cost a little more and it will be easy for us to burn the image.

We will not have an optical zoom , and still a x2 zoom will give us a good result thanks to the 48 MP of the sensor. Beyond that, the quality will drop a lot, and we do not recommend using it unless we have no choice. The camera interface will only allow us to select the x2 directly, while the rest will have to do the uncomfortable pinch gesture to increase. We will have a good performance portrait mode, well outlining the edges of the object in the foreground and allowing adjustment of the degree of bokeh effect behind it.

The wide angle will give us very acceptable resolution, although we expected more with its 16 MP, also having good lighting and little fisheye effect in the corners. While it is true, the width of view is not too great, not making much of a difference compared to the main sensor. The Macro sensor is usually purely decorative, although in this case its 5 MP will be greatly appreciated to give us great resolution and detail in the photographs. If we think about which audience this terminal is aimed at, it will be very useful to see small print and use it as a magnifying glass for precision tasks.

Regarding its performance in night photography mode, the normal mode generates a somewhat blurry image in most cases, although it is true that the dynamic range and shadow interpretation is quite similar to what the human eye perceives. When we activate the night mode, the white balance is quite aggressive to overexpose the image in general, eliminating the orange tones and adding more showiness. The result is not bad, but it still has a way to go.

The recording section will not be its main strength, as we do not have optical stabilization or 4K recording . In this sense, it will be very fair in front of a smartphone for the general public, and we will not be able to record in slow motion either.

Front sensor

The front sensor equipped will be a Sony Exmor with 20 MP resolution , ISOCELL type lens and focal 2.0. This one will also be capable of recording in 1080p resolution, albeit at 30 FPS.

If the front sensor will have something good, it is its high resolution , and at least the selfies will come out in great detail. It performs well in good general lighting photos, but in backlight or light / shadow situations it will easily burn photos . It also has portrait mode and beauty mode, like most. For night photos it will not be a very good option, since it takes little light and a lot of noise in the image.

Final words and conclusion about the UMIDIGI Bison Pro

We conclude the analysis and it is time to make the final balance, where it will be clear to us that the UMIDIGI Bison Pro will be mainly intended for use in extreme conditions . These can include manual work in industry, field or masonry, where there will be a lot of dirt, humidity or habitual falls.

Its strong back case , reinforced edges and IP69K protection will be key and unique characteristics of it. We will pay for this with greater weight and volume of the terminal, making it a little more uncomfortable to carry in your pocket. It has unusual functions such as a barometer, thermometer or compass that also make it attractive for adventure sports and mountaineering.

UMIDIGI has also thought about what the current public demands, incorporating extremely complete connectivity by including NFC for mobile payment. The camera package has given us very good results for the price of the terminal, although both application and extras will still be below the mainstream terminals . More or less the same happens with the interface, using Android 11 from the factory , although with a fairly simple presentation and with just the right customization functions. At least we have a pack of exclusive applications to take advantage of the sensors of the terminal.

We recommend reading our guide on the best smartphones

Another of its main strengths will be the enormous autonomy it gives us, easily surpassing two and even three days with 5000 mAh . The well-balanced hardware ensures fluidity in normal use and even some games, although those 4/8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage stand out . One aspect with room for improvement will be the biometric sensors , a bit lazy compared to the high speed that we already see in low and mid-range terminals.

Although we have discussed the main virtues and weaknesses of the UMIDIGI Bison Pro , for a price of between 140 and 200 euros for the versions with 4 and 8 GB of RAM we will not be able to ask for much more. The manufacturer has managed to make a mobile focused on resistance extremely complete in connectivity and functions. Recommended for rough use without a doubt.

The Professional Review team awards him the gold medal :

DESIGN – 81%

PERFORMANCE – 80% CAMERA – 79% AUTONOMY – 90% PRICE – 90% 84 %

If we are bricklayers or work in the industry, the UMIDIGI Bison Pro will be the best quality / price terminal, with IP69K, reinforced housing and a large section of connectivity and extras.
