Types of bacteria

Bacteria are prokaryotic single-celled microorganisms. This means that, unlike the cells of living beings, those of bacteria do not have a defined nucleus nor do they have internal membranous organelles. Bacteria are the most widespread organisms in the world, since they can live in practically any place, be it extreme climates or in conditions where it is very difficult for any living being to survive. In this way, the calculations on the amount of bacteria that exist in the world are stratospheric. For their part, bacteria are very important elements for different phenomena that occur both on the planet and inside living beings. Such is the case with humans.

Although bacteria are popularly identified as harmful agents that cause disease or illness, the truth is that in many cases they are beneficial for health and for maintaining certain biochemical processes that occur on Earth. In fact, some bacteria paradoxically protect humans from disease or illness. However, it cannot be denied that some bacteria cause serious diseases, which is why they are commonly attacked by antibiotics. In terms of their classification, bacteria are divided mainly based on their shape or structure. But in some cases, these formations are very changeable thanks to the fact that the same bacteria can quickly change shape.

Types of bacteria:

Coco: these types of bacteria have spherical shapes. In turn, these types of bacteria are subdivided into other groups that are known by the names of diplococcus (grouped in two), tetracoccus (grouped in groups of four), streptococcus (which are grouped in a chain) and staphylococcus (grouped cluster-shaped or irregularly shaped. These types of bacteria are the most common, as they can be found in many foods and places. Particularly they contain foods that are in poor condition (decomposition or putrefaction) or that were not cooked properly. Like fish and shellfish, bacteria of this type can also be found in places that have not been cleaned or that have poor hygiene.

Bacilli: these types of bacteria have a rod or rod shape, so they are much longer and thinner than other types of bacteria. In turn, the bacilli are subdivided into Gram positive and negative. Generally, these types of bacteria are harmful to humans, however many of them are also beneficial since they are present in various dairy products. Bacilli can be found in many places, mainly food. As we said, they are usually beneficial for humans. Some products that contain bacilli are yogurt, cheeses and other derivatives of milk, various kinds of mushrooms, and even medical products such as penicillin.

Helical bacteria: within this type of bacteria are all those that have helix shapes. Within these are the vibrios, which are similar to a peanut, the spirils that have a rigid shape and the spirochetes that are in the shape of a flexible helix. Bacteria of this type are more difficult to find, since thanks to their complexity they are found mainly in specific environments. Helical bacteria are found mainly in organisms or living beings, so they are part of blood and other types of fluids.
