The list of ingredients to make a homemade hand sanitizer is very simple and short. But if there is an element that should not be missing, it is alcohol, as it is the one that is responsible for eliminating microorganisms.

Given the high demand that exists, many pharmacists and experts in the field have published a standard recipe to make a homemade disinfectant and whose ingredients are:

  • 250 ml  of 96º alcohol
  • 30 ml of water
  • 25 ml of liquid glycerin or aloe vera

Its preparation is as simple as mixing all the components and pouring it into a container with a dispenser so that it maintains the disinfectant and is easy to apply.

However, to this mixture, the World Health Organization recommends adding 7 ml of hydrogen peroxide which, as you already know, is a disinfectant and capable of eliminating bacteria. As you will understand, the combination of alcohol and hydrogen peroxide can be very harmful to the skin. Hence, it is recommended to use products that can protect the skin, so combining it with a certain amount of glycerin or aloe.

How to wash your hands properly

Following the advice of doctors, and whenever we are at home, in no case can the use of alcohol-based hand sanitizer substitute for washing hands with soap and water.

At first it may seem like a very simple task, but washing your hands is essential to protect ourselves from both Covid-19 and other types of viruses. To be effective, it is essential to do it in the following way:

  1. Wet your hands with warm or cold water and turn off the tap.
  2. Next, lather your hands and rub them against each other until they foam. Make sure to wash the back, between the fingers and under the nails well, as these are usually areas where viruses like to lodge. The estimated duration of a good hand washing is calculated in 20 seconds. You can control this time by humming “Happy Birthday” twice.
  3. Once finished, rinse your hands with water and dry them with a towel. It is important that there is no humidity to avoid the appearance of fungi.
  1. And, to ensure complete disinfection, apply a little of the homemade hand sanitizer we just made and spread it over both hands.
  2. But this deep cleaning is useless if, for example, the balls that we use to clean and scrub are contaminated. Therefore, they must be disinfected very frequently. Take note of the following tips for disinfecting rags and scourers.
