Self-transformation: how can psychology help?

Self-transformation: how can psychology help?

The biggest mistake you can make is to be afraid all the time to make one.

Multiprofessional team

In some cases, such as when there is a diagnosis of bipolar disorder or depressive disorder, it is recommended that the treatment be done by a psychiatrist and psychologist, working in partnership to better support the patient.

Who goes through post-traumatic stress, for example, may also require multiprofessional treatment, involving specialists such as psychiatry and psychology.

But what is the role of psychology? Through psychology, one can broaden one’s view of the world. Psychological care is provided through technique, which guarantees ethical and safe care, and also through empathy, that is, recognition of the uniqueness of each one, as each is unique in the world.

Valuing this existential uniqueness, the potential and beauty of each being, is the profession of psychology .

Personal transformation

As a result, personal transformation takes place from within the person himself, producing changes in his environment. Like almost everything in life, transformation requires careful and persistent work to be accomplished.

It is part of this work that is done in the psychology office during the sessions, whether in person or online .

Happiness: determinant or determined? The existential dilemma

The attraction to happiness is common to all. When experiencing happiness, the person feels lovingness, pleasure and harmony. The experience of happiness is something that everyone longs for, but different people trace different paths to happiness.

Some people are more successful, others, however, despite how hard they try, they end up feeling an existential emptiness or a feeling of sadness and apathy.

But why does this happen? How to explain the difference between people who experience more happiness and those who, on the contrary, even commit suicidal behavior? All people, in their daily lives, go through various situations that can generate happiness, but which can also generate sadness.

This is the same for everyone. But why do some people feel happier and other people feel unhappy most of the time, for years in a row?

Psychology can help in some ways: some people make their happiness dependent on everything going perfectly in their lives. However, there is a dose of unpredictability in human existence, and leaving happiness dependent on external factors is like putting yourself on a seesaw: one day you can be very happy, the next, all that happiness is gone.

Through psychotherapy one can start to perceive happiness as a state that does not depend only on external factors, but rather, as an internal factor that ends up even generating positive situations in life.

Attachment and comfort zone

There is a difference between personal fulfillment and comfort zone. It is not just a difference, but it is the fact that they can be understood as two poles of a continuum.

The greater the personal fulfillment, the greater is the courage to leave the comfort zone and reach new experiences and achievements. The more a person gets attached to his comfort zone, the less conditions he will have to feel satisfied, full or fulfilled, because the comfort zone is limiting while personal fulfillment expands horizons.

Personal fulfillment is a characteristic that makes happiness more stable, as it is not conditioned by something external. Comfort zone can be understood as attachment to the known, attachment to the way it has been for a long time.

Thus, a person can be in his comfort zone when, for example, he pursues his happiness always chasing things, always in the same way, always achieving the same results. This vicious cycle can create an illusion in the individual that he is struggling to transform, to evolve, but because the methods never change, the results remain the same.

Personal fulfillment can be achieved through self – knowledge , because when the person knows the existence of his psychic shadows, that is, the points he can improve, and at the same time he is aware that “nobody is perfect”, that person becomes allows you to progress without pressure.

As a rule, on the contrary, someone who is in their comfort zone has little self-knowledge, as the possibility of diving into their own universe can cause paralyzing fear.

Emotional balance, self-care and quality of life

One of the parameters used to check someone’s quality of life is the person’s degree of functional independence, that is, their ability to self-care.

Generally the term self-care refers to hygiene and physical health care, but it is also possible to use it with psychic care in mind. But what does that mean?

Emotional health or emotional balance has a strong behavioral component. It can be said that proactive behaviors are more successful in the context of interpersonal relationships and generate more quality of life than reactive behaviors.

Proactivity is related to creative behaviors, the ability to listen, the absence of prejudice and rigid ideas.

Reactivity, on the other hand, tends to be more based on pre-established conceptions about the world than on valuing existential heterogeneity. Reactive behavior tends to make people stuck in their own world, while proactivity leads to personal growth and harmonious relationships in a variety of environments and contexts.

Emotional balance relates to the concept of emotional intelligence . The ability to be at peace and harmonize with various types of people, from different backgrounds and customs, makes personal satisfaction easier, as there are fewer demands, fewer demands, less expectations.

Over the course of a day, in different environments, such as work, family, school, etc., emotional balance enables the acceptance of personal differences in an inclusive and humanized way.

Investment in you and personal development

Happiness, personal satisfaction, self-knowledge, creativity, emotional balance… how much good, but also, at times, difficult to feel in practice.
