Scarify | What it is and when to do it

The lawn is a type of plant that gives distinction to any garden, and that requires a certain maintenance. Scarifying the grass is one of the most important activities.

Who does not like to have a well maintained lawn, of those that appear in the movies? It is even a resource that increases the value of any house.

Unlike what you can read out there, the lawn is not easy to maintain . Once the trick has been caught , the job is much simpler. However, care must be taken, since the minimum error can be lethal to achieve good maintenance.

One of the most important tasks to be carried out in relation to its maintenance is that of scarifying .

But what exactly is scarifying the grass? When do we have to do it? We will study this topic in depth in the following sections:

What is grass scarification?

As much as we strive to keep the grass in good condition, over time we will see that it presents a dry and leftover vegetation that we will have to eliminate. Stems can also present some important problems; and they are not only related to the aesthetics of the lawn, but internally they could also cause certain inconveniences to consider.

When scarifying grass, what is done is to encourage root aeration, so that the grass can grow in the way that one would expect. In addition, organic matter is also added to make the soil more fertile, and at the same time the grass receives all the necessary nutrients to be able to proliferate and continue its development.

The scarifying is a process of scratching superficially to the ground, trying to kill the maximum number of felt possible. When we talk about felt we mean a thin layer between 1-2 cm thick that forms in the area of the surface on which the grass is. This mass is formed by traces of roots, earth, as well as leaves that have accumulated in the area.

The problem of the accumulation of this mass is that it prevents in some way the proliferation of water roots, air and fertilizer. And not only that, but it creates favorable conditions for fungi to develop.

With the aeration process (method that involves making holes in the ground), it is possible to oxygenate the soil at a depth of around 10cm. Although it is true that the aeration process breaks the filter a bit, it is not as effective as scarifying .

When to scarify the grass?

We cannot scarify grass when we feel like it, but we must study the best moment.

In general, the best time to scarify grass is usually in spring, at which time, at least, it will be necessary to make a scarification.

In autumn it is recommended to make another. This will be essential, not recommended only, if a lot of filter has been formed due to excessive treading on the grass, either because it is a clay soil, in addition to many other factors.

Aeration is also important, although this process can be spaced more in time by making one every 2-3 years or so.

How to scarify grass?

Tools you will need

  • Hand jib (4-6 spikes):This tool will be very practical for you to click regularly. However, it is only a good resource for small grass surfaces, for larger ones it would be a somewhat slow and tedious process.
  • Hollow barbed handjib : This gallows allows to work at about 10 cm in length. It is a tool that not only makes a compressed gap, but also removes earth. But the problem remains the same: it is a slow process.
  • Barbed roller:It is a tool that includes a long series of curlers used to settle the soil once the grass has been sown. It is a much faster option than the gallows, besides being able to be used in large gardens. They are economical and very practical.
  • Professional machines (punch machines):These professional machines are those that are used to cover large areas of land (for example, they are very practical for golf courses). They are usually used between 2-3 times a year.

Tips for scarifying grass.

-We recommend that you cut with a specialized machine as low as possible. This type of cut will solve our work a lot, since then we can collect the remains of grass without having to complicate our lives.

-You will need a scarifier (there are gasoline or electric models on the market). Choose a model that has blades that touch the earth. Thus we can eliminate most of the putty to obtain a good oxygenation of the lawn.

-When you have finished using the tool, all you have to do is collect the resulting vegetation. For this we can use a rake with flexible and fine spikes. There are many types on the market (rakes, metal brooms …). The selection of one model or another will depend on the type of lawn to be treated, as well as your personal preferences. Most likely, you have to try different options until you choose one that suits what you are looking for.

-After having collected the vegetation we can always pass the scarifier again to speed up the grass collection.

-That you don’t forget to apply organic matter to the soil, how can it be compost, manure or earthworm humus . All these options are key to fertilize the soil and get it to proliferate.

-Finally, how could it be otherwise, the only thing that must be done is to apply an abundant irrigation to ensure that the above organic matter can provide all the nutrients and a characteristic texture. It establishes a good periodicity of irrigation so that the organic matter dissolves.
