History
The 1960s receded with a warning: two cholera outbreaks in Buenos Aires, one in 1867 and the other in 1868, left hundreds of victims.
Called South Cemetery, its construction became necessary as a result of the large number of people who died in San Andrés de Giles ( Buenos Aires ) between 1869 and 1871 as a result of the yellow fever and cholera epidemics. Its works were completed on November 29, 1873 and this cemetery was the third in this town, it reached the burial limit of 18 thousand corpses, with the yellow fever of 1871 . Its constructions, crosses and those who lie buried there, former residents of Giles, make this site a place of relevant historical value. Today, only the remains of this place remain where the Florentino Ameghino Park is today.
It has been a refuge for years of beggars, homeless families and young couples in search of privacy, the authorities have totally ignored this place until very recently, since once it was named a “historical place” they have decided to proceed with the removal of rubble and clear it of weeds.
