Clockwork Caretakers are a new type of collectible introduced in Resident Evil 4 Remake . You can find one in each of the remake’s 16 chapters. Similar to the toys introduced in previous remakes of the series, Clockwork Caretakers are destructible wind-up dolls that belong to Ramon Salazar. They all make a squeaky mechanical noise, so if you listen closely, you’ll know when you’re near one. Destroying all 16 Clockwork Caretakers will earn you the “Clockwork Revolution” achievement and unlock the Ultimate Knife for purchase.
You’ll find some Clockwork Overseers naturally as you progress through the story, but many are so well hidden that finding them on your own will be incredibly difficult. In this guide, I’ll tell you where to find all 16 Clockwork Overseers, as well as give you some tips to help you track them down on your own (or at least increase your chances of success).
Note! If you progress too far in the story and do not collect the caretakers, for example, in the village, you will not be able to return for them, just as you will not be able to collect all the caretakers in one playthrough. However, this is not required for either the achievement or any of the challenges. With this in mind, it is highly recommended to destroy these dolls during your first visit to the relevant locations.
Tips for Finding Clockwork Keepers
As mentioned above, there are 16 clockwork overseers in Resident Evil 4 Remake, and if you are near one of them, you will hear a creaking metallic sound. However, these creaks are often obscured by enemies, gunfire, or dialogue. The creaking mechanical noise can easily be confused with the sound of metal cages that contain treasure.
For this reason, it is recommended to open the game settings and enable all subtitles, including the hidden effects. When searching for Clockwork Overseers with closed captions enabled, you will see a notification on the screen about the creaking sound whenever you are near the figure. Closed captions will be invaluable during combat, as they will warn you that there is an enemy nearby. You can also use them to search for rats on behalf of the merchant.
Although the treasure cages and hanging lights make a sound very similar to the caretakers, they are not mentioned in the closed captions!
Finally, before we go into detail about each Overseer, it’s important to note that each of these clockwork dolls only needs to be destroyed once. This means that if you destroy an Overseer in one save file, you don’t have to go looking for it in another.
Clockwork Caretaker 1
This Clockwork Overseer is located inside the first stone house you encounter when you reach Lakeside Settlement. After clearing out the enemies in this area, including the ones throwing explosives, climb into the ruined house through the window and head to the right. Look up at the ceiling to spot the Clockwork Overseer perched on a broken wooden plank above your head.
Clockwork Caretaker 2
The second Clockwork Overseer can be found in a small shack on the way to the village chief’s mansion. After passing through the door with the hexagonal emblem, continue towards the goal and go up the stairs. After going up them, look to the left and you will see a small shack. Inside it lies a note with detailed information on the Clockwork Overseers. On the right side, on a haystack in the corner of the room, look for the second Overseer. If the Overseer is in close proximity, do not waste ammunition – attack him with a knife.
Clockwork Caretaker 3
The third Clockwork Overseer is hidden on the dock next to the merchant’s shop in Chapter 3, which you’ll reach after traveling through the quarry. This area also contains the first shooting range. Once you reach the correct location with the merchant, go down the stairs to the left of him (if you’re facing the shop) to reach the dock. Follow the path to the right, past the locked crate. When you reach the end of the dock, look at the top of the stacked boxes and you’ll see the Overseer through a small gap.
Clockwork Caretaker 4
To find the fourth Clockwork Caretaker, you need to return to the Lakeside Settlement and open the door using the key with the symbol found in the elder’s mansion. Look for the grate leading to the cave in the northern part of the Lakeside Settlement. Although you probably found this door in the first chapter, you were unable to open it then, since you only received the key with the symbol at the end of the second chapter.
Use the symbol key to go through the gate and up the stairs in the unlocked area. You will reach the forest altar. Go to the northern fence and find the clockwork doll on the ground. This clockwork caretaker is harder to spot due to the rain and general darkness. Before leaving the forest altar, search the cart on the western side and take the small key.
Clockwork Caretaker 5
The fifth Clockwork Caretaker is located in the attic of the village chief’s mansion. During your previous visit to the mansion, you may have found a folding ladder leading to the attic, but you couldn’t get up there because you needed Ashley’s help to get there.
If you didn’t find the folding ladder in Chapter 2, go up to the second-floor bedroom and move the painting hanging on the wall to find a lever. Pull it and you’ll see a ladder. Help Ashley climb up to it and she’ll lower the ladder for Leon. The clockwork caretaker is in the southern part of the attic, behind some breakable boxes. In the attic of this house, look for another treasure – an antique camera worth 10,000 pesetas.
Clockwork Caretaker 6
After narrowly escaping from enemies at the end of Chapter 5, you’ll need to fight your way through a heavily guarded valley. Once all enemies are cleared out, head through the gate to continue to the checkpoint. Look for a large bonfire on the right. Before approaching the bonfire, clear out the hut on the left to avoid being caught off guard by the enemy. The sixth clockwork caretaker is located right in front of the bonfire. Inside the hut in front of the bonfire is a treasure – the Cup of Atonement (7,000 pesetas, but you can insert 3 gems).
Clockwork Caretaker 7
After defeating Garrador (a blind enemy with giant claws) in the castle prison, use the key from the dungeon to open the door, climb the stairs and reunite with Ashley. You will find yourself in a warehouse leading to the treasure room. The seventh clockwork caretaker is standing on the shelves in the center of the room. In this storeroom you can find the treasure – 1 spinel.
Clockwork Caretaker 8
The eighth clockwork overseer is located at the top of one of the towers of the castle walls, during which an armored El Gigante will throw rocks at you. Immediately after the cutscene in which the monster is shown, go to the right side of the tower and jump down. Continue to the right and go up the stairs, trying to dodge the flying rocks.
Once you reach the top of the stairs, you’ll notice some crates on your right. To find the Wind-Up Doll, you’ll need to go around the area and get to the other side of the same crates. The Wind-Up Guardian is standing on some sandbags.
Turning around, you can run past the steps to find another treasure – an emerald.
Clockwork Caretaker 9
At the start of Chapter 9, you’ll find yourself in a room with a typewriter, and the ninth Clockwork Warden will be underneath the stairs you take to get to the courtyard. To get to the item, go through the maze, heading towards the northwest edges of the hedge. If you’re standing in front of the stairs and facing the center of the area, then: follow the path to the left, turn right at the end of the path, turn left, go along the right side of the hedge opposite, and turn right to find the Clockwork Warden hiding behind some trash. There’s a spray nearby.
Clockwork Caretaker 10
Once you’ve exited the flooded cave, head through the long, narrow hallway that runs underneath the ballroom. You’ll soon open a door and see a familiar purple flame, indicating that there’s a trading post nearby. Opposite the purple flame torch is a metal grate. Approach it and you’ll see the tenth Clockwork Overseer hanging upside down behind the grate.
Clockwork Caretaker 11
The eleventh Clockwork Overseer can be found at the station, which can be visited after the first minecart ride with Louis. Defeat the enemies guarding the ruined structure and look up above the central door to find the Clockwork Doll.
Before leaving this place, go out to the balcony to pick up the treasure – a decanter (4000 pesetas, you can insert two gems).
Clockwork Caretaker 12
The twelfth Clockwork Watcher is located on the first floor of the Clock Tower. Once you enter the Clock Tower, defeat all the enemies and head to the northwest edge of the area. The Clockwork Watcher is standing on some boxes under the stairs.
Clockwork Caretaker 13
Immediately after defeating the first enemy armed with a rocket launcher, you will go through several doors, along an empty path in a cave to reach an area with cargo containers and several enemies (in front of a huge, unopenable gate). Defeat all the enemies and approach the nearby treasure. To the right of the elegant crown is some heavy construction equipment, including a green forklift. The thirteenth Clockwork Overseer is on the floor, under a container on a truck.
Clockwork Caretaker 14
Immediately after the cutscene where Saddler kidnaps Ashley, go through the doors to follow them. Take the path on the right to reach a place overlooking the camp. Kill the enemy and enter the small control room on the right. The fourteenth Clockwork Overseer is standing on a locker inside this control room.
Clockwork Caretaker 15
The fifteenth Clockwork Caretaker can be found after the cutscene where you say goodbye to Mike in the helicopter. Head to the objective and enter the nearby building. Defeat the Regenerador and enter the small room to the right of the valve. This room has a vertical beam in the center. Look up from it and you’ll see the caretaker on the perpendicular beam.
In the same room there is a treasure – an ornate necklace (11,000 pesetas), so be sure to pick it up.
Clockwork Caretaker 16
The final Clockwork Caretaker can be found during the countdown that begins after defeating Saddler. Run into the underpass and jump over the falling bridge with Ashley. When you approach the door, an enemy will jump on you. The Clockwork Caretaker is in the same room. To find it, look to the right and look for the doll on the boxes next to the forklift.
