Pizza is a type of fast food based on leavened flat bread. Even if the forerunners of what we now understand to be pizza have existed for hundreds of years, a Neapolitan Italian named Raffaelle Esposito would be the “father of modern pizza”. He started selling pizzas as early as 1889.
The pizza is usually garnished with cheese, tomato sauce, a selection of meats, vegetables and other seasonings – as the cook likes. The pizza can be baked or grilled in an oven and the cheese is an important component in the preparation. There are many varieties of pizza that vary with each country. Among these, Tandoori Paneer pizza (India), Spicy Pizza Balado (Indonesia), Pizza Margherita (Italy), Pizza slices (Rome), Sicilian pizza (Sicily), Mexican pizza (Mexico), New York style pizza (New York) and chocolate pizza in Brazil. Some of the common pizza restaurants around the world include Pizza Hut, Dominos, Little Caesars and Sbarro.
Brief history of pizza
It is said that the first pizza was eaten by the Greeks who had settled in Italy in 600 BC. However, the pizza began to gain popularity around the year 1889, when chef Esposito was invited to make pizza in honor of a visiting queen called Margherita. The pizza, which Regina Margherita found very appreciated, was made with tomatoes, basil and mozzarella. Later, Esposito called this type of pizza after the queen.
Pizza was introduced in the United States by Italian immigrants in the 19th century. It quickly became popular in cities like New York, Philadelphia and Chicago. In fact, in the 1900s, the first American pizzeria was opened in New York by Gennuardo Lombardi. In the following years, pizza spread to other cities in the United States and around the world.
The American connection has always been very important in the history of pizza. In fact, do you know that there is a National Pizza Month in the United States? The month of October was made Pizza Month by Gerry Durnell in 1984. On this day, people consume varieties of pizza and visit different pizzerias.
Pizza World Records
The largest pizza ever was prepared in Rome in 2012. It was called “Ottavia” and measured 13, 570 ft 2 (1.261 m 2 ). So, in 2016, the longest pizza ever was produced in Naples. The pizza was 1.85m long and was prepared using many ovens over its entire length.
In addition to these two awards for pizza, there is also a record of the most expensive pizza of all time. According to the Guinness World Records , this expensive pizza is found in the Maze Restaurant in London and costs £ 100. Today there are even more expensive pizza costs, like £ 4,200 (Haggis Restaurant in Glasgow, Scotland) and US $ 1,000 (Nino’s Beautiful Pizzeria , New York City in the United States). However, these have not yet been registered in the Guinness World Records.
