What is meant by the “ Hinckes Bird’s ” method of natural ventilation

This method is applicable to sash windows, and was introduced by Dr. Hinckes Bird. I t consists in raising
the lower sash of a window a few inches and then fitting in the aperture a block of wood cut exactly the same
size. Tne air then enters the room in an upward direc­tion between the two sashes and no draught is experienced.
