Madeline Menendez Garcia . Architect and Doctor of Technical Sciences at the University of Havana, 2005. Studies completed

Graduated in Architecture in 1966 at the University of Havana and later specialized in Urban Planning. She holds a doctorate in Technical Sciences from the University of Havana, 2005.

Career path

She executed her first projects in rural areas such as “La Yaya”, “La Sierpe” and “Manicaragua”, during her Social Service after graduating from university in 1966. She was located in Urban Planning of the then Housing and Urban Planning Institute of the Ministry of the Construction.

He remained five years in the former province of Las Villas, also assuming the development of other cities in the territory.

He returned to Havana in 1971 and began his professional activity in Urbanism of the National Group of Housing and Urbanism of MICONS. From that stage is the remodeling of the neighborhood of Cayo Hueso, and from there it passed in 1978 to the recently created Empresa de Proyectos 26 y Kohly.

The National Center for Conservation, Restoration and Museology, CENCREM, of the Ministry of Culture, hosted her from 1982 to 1994. There she participated in the preservation of the architectural and urban heritage of the capital and other historical sites in the country. Some examples were the Delimitation of urban areas of historical-cultural value and in the Urban Regulations for the municipalities of Old Havana and Plaza de la Revolución.

Also included in this period is technical advice to the Dominican Republic for the preparation of the proposal for the Delimitation of the Historic Center of Santiago de los Caballeros . At that time he was the Representative of Cuba before the group of socialist countries dedicated to the Conservation of Historic Cities, ICOMOS.

As of 1994, he joined the team of the Master Plan for the Comprehensive Revitalization of Old Havana , of the Office of the Historian of the City of Havana, as Principal Specialist for the rehabilitation of the Historic Center. She collaborated with Venezuelan cultural institutions and with FUNDAPATRIMONIO in the preparation of the Special Rehabilitation Plan for the “La Pastora” Traditional Center, while reviewing the Plan for the Historic Center of Petare and the Historic Center of Caracas .

As the subject of his doctorate, he presented the research developed on “Typological studies of residential architecture in Old Havana” and obtained that condition in 2005. The documentation later became the book La Casa Habanera , published in 2007 by Editorial Boloña . , with which a year later he won the 2008 Critics Award in the category of Scientific Work of the Cuban Book Institute .

Since 2006 he has been a member of the teaching staff of the San Gerónimo University College of the University of Havana, where he teaches “Preservation and Management of Cultural Historical Heritage”, while chairing the Career Commission of said institution from 2008 to 2014.

In 2010, she retired, but continues as a professor at San Gerónimo and at the Faculty of Architecture of the Technological University of Havana, CUJAE. Two years later, applying typological analysis as a work tool, she carried out studies on “Residential architecture in Vedado”, a title pending publication. Her work includes “El Viejo Vedado” and numerous specialized articles for Cuba and abroad.

It maintains an important international collaboration with countries such as the Dominican Republic, Venezuela , Italy , Spain and France .
