Lazaro Costa Mendez . Cuban sportsman of the specialty of Water Polo . Throughout his sports career he has achieved great results. He was the leading scorer and the most technical in different tournaments both nationally and internationally.

biographical synthesis

He was born on March 27, 1957 in Havana ( Cuba), has formed a family composed of 3 children, 2 grandchildren and a wife who has a degree in Physical Culture and Physical Trainer of the National Ballet of Cuba .

sports career

He started in the sport by pure coincidence, by a friend whose brother trained in the Martí park . As he had a good height he was immediately captured.

In 1967 he started at the Sports Initiation School ( EIDE ) which at that time was called Ciro Frías . He spent 14 years in the national team.

First Championship

His first competition was in the youth category, representing the Marcelo Salado Lastra School , against the Argentine national team in Isla de la Juventud , obtaining 1st place.

His first official international debut was in 1972 in a child-juvenile CCCAN at the Ciudad Deportiva Coliseum .

He started in the national team in 1974 until 1988 , with sports coaches Manuel Romo Capote and Oscar Fernández . He debuted in Tbilisi , Georgia , then Soviet Union , at the Friendship Games taking 3rd place.

  • Bronze medal at the World Cup held in Malibu , California , in 1987 .
  • Gold medal at the Havana 1991 Pan American Games , where he participated in the technical group.

  • 8th place at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics .

Work as representative of Cubadeportes

He was during the last government of Rafael Caldera and lived through the transition of mandate for Hugo Chávez in Caracas , Venezuela with Alberto Juantorena . He received the pioneers of Barrio Adentro Deportivo . He participated in the organization of the baseball games that Commanders Hugo Chávez and Fidel Castro directed in Havana and in the State of Lara , Venezuela. He was in Ecuador as a representative of Cubadeportes

Sports Trainers

During his sports career he had excellent sports coaches including Raúl Mesil, Ernesto Martínez, Manuel Romo Capote and Oscar Fernández.

Present

He currently works at the Cubadeportes SA company of the INDER commercial entity , where he coordinates actions related to Venezuela.
