biographical synthesis
He was born in Bilbao , Spain , on February 8 , 1901 . For work reasons of his father, in 1907 his family traveled to Buenos Aires , Argentina and in 1909 he settled in Chile . In 1918 he entered the School of Architecture of the University of Chile . In parallel, he studied painting at the School of Fine Arts, where he was a student of Juan Francisco González . Although he graduated from architecture in 1922 , he graduated two decades later.
Trajectory
He served as an architect , painter , and professor of architecture. He was dean of the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Chile in times of great change, highlighting his management of rejecting the formalisms imposed by progressive groups.
In 1923 he was appointed Director of the School of Architecture of the University of Chile and a year later he was commissioned for the project of the building of the School of Law of said house of studies.
In 1927 he was appointed professor of the Chair of Decorative Composition at the School of Architecture. That same year he won by public contest, the execution of the Chilean Pavilion at the Ibero-American Exposition in Seville and traveled to Spain to fulfill his mission.
In 1946 he participated in the reform of the teaching of architecture that proposed the humanistic and integral formation of the architect.
Juan Martínez Gutiérrez was the first professional to receive the National Prize for Architecture in 1969 .
Death
He died in Santiago de Chile in 1971 .
