History

During the Decade, awareness-raising and measures were promoted to improve the situation of persons with disabilities , as well as to achieve equal opportunities. Subsequently, the Assembly called on Member States to celebrate the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, with a view to promoting the integration into society of persons with disabilities (resolution 47/88).

In the world

About 15% of the world’s population, or one billion people, live with some form of disability.

Currently, there are more than 500 million people who have some type of disability regardless of where they are in the world, their lives are very often limited by physical or social obstacles.

The general public and decision-makers are often ignorant of the large number of people living with disabilities and impairments around the world and the problems they face. The mission of WHO (World Health Organization) is to improve the quality of life of these people through national, regional and global activities, and to promote awareness of the magnitude and consequences of the problem.

The purpose of the conference is to better understand the different aspects of disabilities and raise support for the dignity, rights and well-being of people with disabilities. It is also intended to carry out an awareness work on the advantages that can be derived from the integration of people with disabilities in all facets of life.

Organization, forms of celebration and adoption of measures

Organization : Holding forums, public debates and information campaigns in support of the International Day focusing on disability and development issues, finding innovative ways and mechanisms by which people with disabilities and their families can be more integrated in the development program.

Celebration : Planning and preparation of events in all places to show, and celebrate, the contributions of people with disabilities to the communities in which they live as agents of development and change.

Taking action : An important aspect of the day is the practical action of integrating disability in all aspects of development, as well as promoting their participation in social life and development on the basis of equality. Take steps to highlight progress and obstacles in the implementation of policies that take into account disability issues, as well as promote public awareness of the contributions of people with disabilities to the development of their communities.
