How to Use Mac HFS + Formatted Drive on Windows

File management plays a critical role in a computer system. It controls how data is stored, organized, and retrieved from the storage medium. In other words, it simply splits data on disk and labels it with filenames and other attributes along with indexing. Without a file management system, data will accumulate in a large frame with no way to trace the beginning and end of information. Any computer systems like Windows, Mac and electronic devices like ATM, smartphones use a file system that can vary from system to system.

Read Mac HFS + Formatted Drive on Windows

Microsoft Windows uses FAT , NTFS, and exFAT file systems for internal devices. Mac OS X uses a file system developed by Apple Inc called HFS +… Mac discs cannot be read by Windows because HFS + is not recognized by Windows by default. Conversely, however, drives formatted with the Windows FAT32 file system are recognized by most devices, including Mac OS. This is why, in most cases, USB drives and external hard drives are formatted with the Windows FAT32 file system due to their maximum compatibility. However, if you want to access Mac Mac HFS + drives on Windows, you might have to do some tweaking to read Mac formatted drives. You can either install the Apple HFS + drivers or use the HFS Explorer to get read access to the drive, which is completely free. In this article, we will introduce some of the ways to read HFS + disks on Windows.

Use HFS Explorer

HFS Explorer is a program that can read Mac format disks as well as read file systems such as HFS, HFS + and HFSX. It’s also worth noting that you need a Java Runtime Environment to use the HFS Explorer. Once the configuration is complete, HFS Explorer automatically searches for and locates the HFS + file system and provides access to those files. The following steps will guide you through using HFS Explorer for Windows 10.

Download and install HFS Explorer here. Now go to launch and enter HFS Explorer.

Click on the HFS Explorer app . A window will open prompting you to install the Java Runtime Environment. Click Ok to install.

Now reboot your system.

When the installation is ready, connect the Mac formatted drive to your Windows PC

Now go to Start and type HFS Explorer .

Open the HFS Explorer app .

Go to File and click Load file system from device to open the Mac formatted drive.

This will automatically open the HFS + file system.

After the files are found and opened, users can extract the files from HFS Explorer to the system drive.

Install Apple HFS + Drivers

Another way to access HFS + files in Windows 10 is to install the Apple HFS + drivers. But make sure you remove Paragon and Mac Drive from the system before processing. The following steps will explain in detail how to install Apple HFS + Drives

Download the Windows driver package here. Extract the downloaded zip file.

Copy the AppleHFS.sys and AppleMNT.sys files .

Paste the files in the following path C: \ Windows \ System32 \ drivers.

The next step is to merge the Add_AppleHFS.reg file with the Windows Registry . To do this, go to the downloaded folder and open the .reg file named Add_AppleHFS.reg .

In the prompt window, click yes and then OK .

Reboot your system.

After completing the setup, connect the Mac formatted drive to your Windows PC.

Go to This PC page and find your Mac formatted drive.

This method will give view access to all HFS + files. It is also worth noting that the above solutions only provide users with read access. The above methods cannot be used to edit or delete Mac format disc files.
