Upgrading NPCs and leveling up is extremely important as it not only unlocks more items and weapons to craft, but also makes them stronger and more useful in combat. Of course, updating them will cost you a lot, but it’s definitely worth it.
To level up an NPC and take them to the next level, head over to them and press the LB or L1 button. This will allow you to spend souls to increase their level. The cost will increase more and more as you level up, with the first update costing 250 souls, the second cost 500 souls, the third one costing 1000 souls, and so on.
We highly recommend that you try to get all of your NPCs to at least level 2 as they will give them a better chance of surviving in a fight. On top of that, bringing your Blacksmith and Gunsmith to level 2 will also allow you to create much stronger weapons and armor, which you will need before fighting the Jotunns anyway.
You should also try upgrading your Tinker after that if you want to be able to craft some of the higher tier materials to start building fortified gates for your village.
