Do you want to find out how to unblock Facebook on Mac ? Then the instructions you need to follow are those reported below.
As anticipated in the initial part of the tutorial, you can do this using some default functions and tools of macOS, but also by intervening on the control panel of your modem/router and using third-party solutions.
macOS Usage Time
The first solution that I recommend you consider to unblock Facebook on Mac consists of deactivating any Screen Time features that may be enabled by intervening in the macOS settings, through which it is possible to block access to unwanted Internet sites from any browser (e.g. Safari ), but also to applications and other features of the operating system.
To do this, first click on the System Settings icon (the one shaped like a gear wheel ) that you find on the Dock bar and select the Screen Time item that you find in the left side menu of the window that opens on the desktop.
At this point, select the Content and privacy item on the right next to the Restrictions section and if the lever attached in the following screen is activated, move it to OFF to completely deactivate the function.
If instead of disabling the feature entirely you want to intervene only on Facebook, select the Content on Store, Web, Siri and Game Center item in the Content and privacy screen above and choose from the Access to Web content menu at the top the Unrestricted access option to allow access to any Internet site, or choose the Restrict adult websites option, click on the Customize button that just appeared and if you find facebook.com or its derivatives (e.g. login.facebook.com ) in the list of restricted sites select the link, click on the (-) button to remove it and on the Done button twice in a row to save the changes.
You may also have blocked Facebook access on your Mac by applying App Limits. To do this, go back to the Screen Time screen above, click on the App Limits item found in the Limit Usage section on the right and if the switch attached in the following screen is activated, move it to OFF to completely disable the function.
If instead of disabling the feature entirely you want to act only on Facebook, identify facebook.com or its derivatives in the list of restricted sites in the App Restrictions screen above and if the switch in the following screen is enabled, move it to OFF , or directly remove Facebook from the list by clicking on the Edit button that appears by placing the cursor over it and then clicking on the Remove Usage Restriction button twice in a row.
Is it impossible to access Facebook on Mac only for a minor ? In this case, you can intervene on the parental controls of macOS, going to deactivate the block for the family member, proceeding as I explained in detail in my guide on how to block a site on Mac .
Hosts file
Another system you have on your side to try to unblock Facebook on Mac is to act on the macOS hosts file . In case you didn’t know, I inform you that it is a small text file that stores host names and the IP addresses to which they are associated, with the purpose of correctly directing Internet browsing starting from the name of a website.
To do this, first start the Terminal by opening the Launchpad after clicking on the relative icon (the one with the colored squares ) attached to the Dock bar , opening the Other folder in the following screen and selecting the appropriate link from there (the one with the black window and the line of code ). Alternatively, click on the Go menu located in the upper left part of the menu bar, select the Utilities item from the menu that appears and select the Terminal icon from there.
In the window now visible on the desktop, enter the command sudo nano /etc/resolv.conf, press the Enter key on your Mac keyboard, type the password for your macOS user account and press the Enter button again .
After completing the steps above, use the directional arrows on the keyboard to reach the line in the hosts file where the string 127.0.0.1 facebook.com or its derivatives (e.g. 127.0.0.1 login.facebook.com ) is present and simply remove it by selecting it with the pointer and then pressing the backspace key on the Mac keyboard.
Once you’re done editing, to save the changes you made to the hosts file, use the control+o key combination and press the Enter key on your Mac keyboard to exit, and use the control+x key combination followed by pressing the Enter key to close the Terminal window.
If you change your mind and want to go back to automatic DNS, all you have to do is open the hosts file again as already explained, remove the previously entered DNS strings and save the changes.
Block sites from modem/router
It could also be that you have no way to access Facebook from your Mac because a block has been applied directly to the modem/router to which you are connected with the computer. To do this you need to get into the device management panel .
So, open your browser , type the modem/router IP address in the address bar and press the Enter key on your Mac keyboard. Generally, the router IP address is 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 . If you see an error message when typing these coordinates, consult my tutorial on how to find the router IP address to identify the correct ones.
Once you have entered the correct IP of the modem/router, if you see a window appear asking you to enter the username and password to access the device’s management panel, use the combinations admin/admin or admin/password , in most cases they are the default ones. If you cannot log in because the combinations I have provided are not correct, to resolve this you can read my guide on how to access the router .
Once logged in, go to the section related to parental control functions and act from there, removing Facebook from the list of blocked sites or directly disabling the function. Then remember to save the changes made by clicking on the appropriate button. Keep in mind that the modem/router may subsequently restart.
Unfortunately, I cannot provide you with specific instructions for your modem/router, as each network device has different menus and items. However, if you encounter any difficulties, you can refer to the following guides dedicated to modems/routers of the most popular brands and providers on my site: Netgear , D-Link , TP-Link , TIM , WINDTRE , Fastweb and Vodafone . For further information, you may also find it useful to consult my guide on how to block a site from the router .
Other solutions
If the methods for unblocking Facebook on Mac that I have already described have not had the desired effect, you can consider implementing other solutions that may prove useful for carrying out the operation that is the subject of this guide, especially if you are unable to access Mark Zuckerberg’s social network because you are not the administrator of the computer and therefore cannot act as indicated or because it is a block by the network administrator , the provider or at a regional level .
In circumstances such as those mentioned above, and especially in the case of a regional block, it can be particularly useful to use a VPN (Virtual Private Network), a private network that acts as an intermediary between the device you are using to browse and the Internet site you are visiting.
Thanks to the feature described above, the VPN is able to make browsing anonymous and also hide the geographic location of those who use it, making the visited Internet site believe that in reality you are somewhere else. Among the many VPNs on the market I suggest NordVPN (which I talked about in detail in my specific tutorial ), Surfshark (which I talked about in my review ), ExpressVPN and PrivadoVPN , which work not only on Mac, but also on other devices and operating systems, which is why they can also be useful for, for example, unblocking Facebook on iPhone and unblocking Facebook on PC , and can count on a vast range of servers scattered around the world, furthermore they protect the user’s privacy by not recording anything of their activities. If you want to know more, I suggest you read my guide on the best VPNs .
Another solution that can be useful for accessing Facebook on Mac in case of regional site blocking is to use a proxy server . Simply put, it is a computer that stands between the device that requests its services and the Internet, which allows you to mask your IP address and, consequently, your geographic location and the name of your service provider.
There are various types of proxy servers , but the most widespread and practical for carrying out the procedure covered in this tutorial is the Web proxy , which “screens” only the traffic generated by the browser. Among the most famous and freely available online services of this type are Hide.me and Proxy Site . For more details, I suggest you read my guide on how to proxy the IP .
If the block is caused by the provider or is regional, you may also benefit from using DNS servers other than those in place, as they usually allow you to bypass restrictions of this kind. To put it briefly, when you browse the Internet, your Mac, but also other devices you own, use DNS servers to “translate” the addresses typed in the browser into the real numeric IP address corresponding to them. They can be set directly on the computer or in any case on the reference devices, but also by intervening on the modem/router.
Among the fastest, most efficient and secure DNS servers are those of Google , OpenDNS (I talked about them in detail in my guide on how to set up OpenDNS ) and Cloudflare . For further information, I recommend reading my guide on how to change DNS on Mac and my general tutorial on how to configure DNS .
How to Unlock Facebook Account on Mac
Your problem is not that you have been blocked from accessing the Facebook site on macOS, but that your account itself is inaccessible. I understand. Well, know that I can also help you to unblock Facebook accounts on Mac .
Let’s start from a fundamental assumption: there can be many reasons why your Facebook account may be blocked. It could be that you deactivated it temporarily thinking you wanted to take a break from using the service, or maybe because you intended to delete it permanently but you changed your mind.
It could also be that your account has been hacked , or maybe that you have violated some terms of service and your profile has been disabled , or, if you are trying to unblock Marketplace on Facebook , that you have violated the Marketplace ones , or that it has been affected by a virus .
Clearly, the actions to take to try to resolve are different depending on the cause of origin. For all the details of the case, I refer you to reading my guide specifically focused on how to unblock Facebook : I am sure that it will be of great help to you.
