How to start playing Dota 2 in 2019

Ultimate guide to the most popular MOBA game in Russia and the CIS

Dota 2 – Multiplayer strategy in the genre of multiplayer online battle arena. The game is a sequel to DotA ( Defense of the Ancients ), a custom modification map for Warcraft 3: Reign of Chaos .

Each match is played by two teams of five players. Each controls one hero with a unique set of skills. To win, the team must destroy the rival’s Fortress – a fortified building, to which you still need to break through the defense of towers, ordinary enemies and heroes controlled by rival players.

Over the past six years since its release, many innovations and changes have been added to Dota 2, which further distinguish it from its predecessor. Thanks to them, the already variable game has become even more diverse, and its mastering is even more difficult.

If you started playing quite recently, but already managed to get lost in a variety of characters, objects, tactics and concepts, then this guide will help you quickly understand the game.

Where to begin?

  1. Tune in to the game.

The average duration of a match in Dota is 40 minutes. Therefore, before you start looking for a match, make sure that nothing will distract you from the game for at least an hour. Otherwise, you risk letting your team down at the most crucial moment.

  1. Decide on your task.

Each hero has a role to play on the battlefield. You, of course, can not follow it, and go, for example, to the forest as a support to farm gold, but this will bring much less benefit to your team than if you help the allied carry (more about local vocabulary is described in the next chapter). You can get acquainted with the strengths and weaknesses of the characters in the “Heroes” tab.

  1. Work as a team.

Dota 2 is a team game. This means that you need to learn how to interact with your allies. Train yourself to communicate to the team everything important that you see or undertake using voice communication.

  1. Change the language of the game to Russian.

If you are bad with English, then compliance with this point is simply necessary. First of all, you need to go to Steam, then find Dota 2 from the list of games, and right-click on it. Then you will get a submenu where you need to click on “Properties”:

Properties

Next, a new window will appear in which you need to click on the “Set launch parameters …”

Launch parameters

After that, a small window will appear in which you need to enter -language russian . We save the changes. Done. Now the language of the text and voice acting in the game will be in Russian.

  1. Assemble a team.

It so happened that the Russian community is overflowing with aggressive players who are unable to cooperate. Of course, having reached a high rank, more adequate people will come across, but first you will have to win a considerable number of matches. Therefore, you should put together a team. If there are no volunteers among your friends, then you can search for people in the services to find teammates. It is important that all of your partners are realistic, willing to fail and learn from their mistakes. Girls also play Dota.

  1. Learn to understand the game.

Your goal in the game is either to win quickly using well-thought-out tactics, or to counter the enemy’s tactics and then destroy his fortress. To get the most out of your team, pick a hero that can hold off multiple enemy heroes, or pick a hero perfect for combining with an ally. Next, focus on the actions of allies / opponents and the items they collect. For example, if there are a lot of magicians with all kinds of “disable” in the enemy team, then it makes sense to collect the Black King Bar . And if the enemy has something that increases his chance of dodging an attack, then take MCB ( Monkey King Bar ).

  1. Watch replays of professional players.

See how people from the top of Europe play. Remember what, how and when they do. Also, review your games to see your mistakes and not repeat them again.

  1. Save difficult characters for later.

Playing as supports and some carries requires a lot of experience and skill. As a rule, they have many more abilities that need to be applied in strictly defined moments. So, barely understanding the game and taking a support, you risk not only becoming a feeder, but also leaving your team without good support. Learn to play simpler characters first. Then, after a few dozen hours, move on to supports and carries. This way you will better understand what is required of you and when.

  1. Learn to finish off creeps.

This is necessary for any character, as it is the main source of income at the beginning of the game. Do not send the hero to the creep, hoping that he will accidentally finish it off. It is better to stay close to the fighting minions and hit them only when you are sure that the blow will finish your target. If for some reason you still can’t finish off creeps, then buy an ax ( Quelling Blade ) at the beginning of the game . It will increase your damage, and therefore the chance to finish off the enemy.

  1. Be more discreet.

Don’t take failure at play too seriously. And even more so, do not throw out your negativity on your allies. This will only aggravate the situation, and also risk getting a complaint from other players.

Dota is a team and situational game. You will not be able to always win playing for the same characters, collecting the same items, since the opposing team and yours will always consist of different heroes. And even more so, you will not win without cooperation with your team.

Do not forget about all this, learn from your mistakes and it will become much easier to play.
