How to silence Apple Watch

I love to keep track of calls, messages, and other notifications on my Apple Watch. But there are many cases where I need to mute my watch, such as during meetings, while sleeping, etc. There are several different options that can help mute my Apple Watch.

In this article, I will explain all the methods so that you know how to mute your Apple Watch at any time.

Before we proceed, there are a few things to know:

  • On Apple Watch, Silent and Do Not Disturb are not the same thing. Silent mode only mutes sounds, so tactile sensations (vibration) will remain enabled if enabled in the settings. Do Not Disturb will also turn off tactile sensations so you won’t be disturbed.
  • Silent mode does not turn off alarms or timers on Apple Watch.

How to put Apple Watch into silent mode in Settings

On Apple Watch

First, let’s check out the old way to enable silent mode on Apple Watch. You can do this on your watch or on your connected iPhone.

Note. Alarms and timers will still ring.

  1. Open Settings and tap Sounds & Tactile on Apple Watch.
  2. Turn on silent mode.
Use the slider to adjust the ringer volume.
  3. Optional: To make your Apple Watch vibrate silently, turn on tactile alerts.

On an iPhone

  1. Open the Watch app.
  2. On the My Watch tab, tap Sounds & Tactile.
  3. Turn on silent mode.
You can also adjust the ringer volume using the slider.

Again, remember that if you want your watch to still vibrate on alerts, turn on tactile alerts.

How to quickly disconnect Apple Watch from incoming iPhone alerts

In the Sounds & Tactile settings on iPhone, you’ll see another option called Cover to Mute. This is handy to quickly turn off the watch when you need it.

When Mute Cover is on and your watch is ringing, you can simply cover it with your hand for at least 3 seconds to mute.

This can be very helpful if you forget to set your watch to silent during a meeting or event.

Quickly mute Apple Watch from Control Center

Here’s a quick way to turn on silent mode on your Apple Watch:

  1. Swipe up on the watch face to access the Control Center.
  2. Tap the bell icon.
It will turn red and a forward slash will appear on it to indicate that silent mode is on.
  3. You will also hear vibration on your wrist if Tactile Alerts are enabled.

To turn off tactile alerts, go to Settings on your Apple Watch or the Watch app on iPhone → tap Sounds & Tactile → turn off tactile alerts.

How to turn on Do Not Disturb mode on Apple Watch

Do not disturb is another convenient way to mute your Apple Watch. This feature prevents calls and alerts from sounding or turning on the watch screen. It turns off all alerts except alarms, timers, and heart rate notifications.

To turn on Do Not Disturb mode, follow these steps:

  1. Swipe up on the watch face to access the Control Center.
  2. Tap the crescent-shaped Do Not Disturb icon.
    It will turn blue.
  3. Tap again to turn off Do Not Disturb mode.

Note. In watchOS 8, Do Not Disturb is tied to the new iOS 15 focus mode. This means that when you tap the Do Not Disturb icon in the Control Center, you’ll be able to choose a specific focus mode.

You can also set your watch to automatically turn on Do Not Disturb mode during exercise.

How to turn on Theater Mode on Apple Watch

You can turn on the Theater mode so that the watch remains silent and the screen remains dark until you press it or press the digital crown or side pusher. It also temporarily disables the Lift your wrist to wake up screen feature and changes the status of your walkie-talkie to unavailable.

  1. Swipe up on the watch face to access the Control Center.
  2. Tap the Theater Mode icon, which looks like a pair of masks.
    It will turn orange.
  3. Tap the icon again to turn off theater mode.

If you mute your Apple Watch using any of the above methods, Siri will not be affected. When Siri believes you said “Hey Siri,” she will answer out loud. To prevent this from happening, you can turn off Hey Siri .

Bonus tip: how to turn off Siri on Apple Watch

  1. Go to Settings on your Apple Watch.
  2. Tap Siri
  3. Disable Listen “Hey Siri”

Note. You can still manually force Siri to listen to you by pressing and holding the Digital Crown during a call.

As you can tell, there are several ways to mute your Apple Watch. This can be confusing. Plus, it won’t affect alarms and timers, so they can ring when you don’t expect it. If you don’t want to hear sounds, your best bet is to turn off your Apple Watch.
