How to set Slack status

Instant messaging apps like Slack give everyone in the workspace an easy, quick way to connect with others. Unlike email, the response is not expected to be delayed because the other person is online. This is rarely the case. Messages can go unread or unanswered if your recipient is busy.

Set backup status

You can set your Slack status to Busy, and you can snooze notifications if you are not, but Slack has better, more information-rich options that you can use to set as your status. For example, if you are in a meeting, you can set a status to say so and set a status to expire automatically.

How to set Slack status

To set Slack status to “No”;

  1. Click your profile icon in the upper right corner.
  2. Select the Set status as missing option.

To set Slack status;

  1. Click your profile icon in the upper right corner.
  2. Select Update Your Status.
  3. Select one of the automatic status messages: “In a meeting”, “No illness”, “On vacation”, etc.
  4. Change when you want to clear the status and click Save.

If none of the default Slack messages work, you can create your own message.

  1. Click your profile icon in the upper right corner.
  2. Enter your own status message
  3. Add an emoticon if you like.
  4. Open the Clear After drop-down list and choose when Slack should automatically clear the message.
  5. Select the Pause Notifications check box if you want to pause notifications while this status is active.

Suspension notifications

Slack users can pause notifications without tying them to a specific status. To pause Slack notifications;

  1. Click your profile icon in the upper right corner.
  2. Select the Pause notifications option from the menu.
  3. Select a preset from the submenu, or select Custom to select the date and time until notifications are paused.
  4. You can schedule when notifications will automatically pause / resume by clicking Set Notification Schedule.

Conclusion

Messaging apps help reduce the number of emails you receive, but you’ll always find that some people expect an immediate response. Being “online” means being ready to answer ten different people at once. Unfortunately, you cannot set notification preferences for each user or channel. If you find that a channel, group, or a specific user is overly active while you are working, you can turn them off. You will need to remember to turn them on because there is no scheduling feature for that.
