How To Set Parental Controls on Google Chrome

To use the parental controls on your Chromebook with Google Family Link, the first thing you will need is a device with Android 5.0 Lollipop or higher, or an Apple device with iOS 9 or higher. On the other hand, the Chromebook must run Chrome OS 71 or higher. If you meet these requirements, now you just have to follow these simple steps:

  • First, download and install the Google Family Link app on your smartphone to set up an account for your child.
  • If it’s a new Chromebook, go through the setup process and sign in with your (primary) account. This is vital as the first account used to log in becomes the Owner account and has access to special privileges.
  • If your Chromebook has already been configured, it is time to go to the second step.
  • Finally, add your child’s account to the Chromebook.

At this point, it is best to disable guest mode and control who can log into your child’s Chromebook, for example. If guest mode or the ability to add new users is available, your child can manipulate or disable the device’s parental controls. To do it, you just have to:

  • Log in to the Owner (primary) account.
  • Click on the account photo.
  • Select the Settings option .
  • Once there, in the People section, click on Manage other people.
  • Enable the Restrict login to the following users option .
  • You will then see a list of accounts added to your Chromebook and you can add more or remove existing ones.
  • Lastly, turn off the Enable guest browsing option .
