Can I send a Word document to Instagram?

Yes, you can send a word document on Instagram but it’s not as simple as other platforms. There will be no attach icon on Instagram, which will allow you to attach the word document. To send a word document on Instagram, you need to use some third-party services such as online converters, cloud storage and so on.

This is because Instagram is essentially a media sharing platform rather than a file sharing platform. As a result, it doesn’t support sharing file formats like .doc, .pdf, epub, and so on.

If you want to send a word document on Instagram, you must be ready to send the document in a supported format such as image or video, or send a link to a cloud storage where the text file of the word document is stored.

How to send a Word document on Instagram

There are three main ways to send a word document on Instagram:

  2. Convert the word document to an image and send it via Instagram
  3. Convert the word document into a video and send it via Instagram

Using a cloud storage

Each of these cloud storage providers allows you to create a free account and store files, imposing a limit, which is still high by default, above 15Gb on average. If you want to increase your file storage size, you can do so by paying a monthly subscription.

However, if you just want to send a word document to Instagram using cloud storage, a free cloud storage account will suffice. To show you an example, in this article we will use: OneDrive from Microsoft and Google Drive from Google to share a word document on Instagram.

Using OneDrive

OneDrive from Microsoft lets you store files on Microsoft servers. If you already have a Microsoft account, you already have an allocation of OneDrive storage space.

If you don’t have a Microsoft account, you can easily create one by following the steps below:

  1. Go to this  link on a desktop computer
  2. Click Create Account
  3. On the page that opens, you can enter any email address of your choice and then use the Hotmail or Outlook domain
  4. Follow the various steps to complete the creation of your account
  5. Then go to OneDrive.live.com and sign in with the Microsoft account you just created. It could be a Hotmail or Outlook account.
  6. Once logged in, click Upload at the top of the screen
  7. A drop down menu will open. Click File from the drop down options
  8. Select the word document you want to share and click Open
  9. Once your file is uploaded, you can click My Files in the upper left corner of the screen
  10. Now scroll down and find the file you just uploaded and click on it to open it in a new browser
  11. When the file opens, click Share in the upper right corner of the screen
  12. From the top menu, click Copy Link
  13. On the link copy page. click Copy
  14. If you see something else like Specific people, click it and change it to anyone with the link
  15. In the settings below, under More Settings, click the dropdown menu and make sure Edit is selected
  16. This is to make sure that the person you are sharing the document with has permission to edit the document. If you don’t want the person to be able to edit the document, you can change the setting to Can view.
  17. Once done, you can go back and click Copy to copy the link and then send it to the person on Instagram
On the phone:
  1. You can download the OneDrive app on your mobile phone to complete the process described below.
  2. Launch the OneDrive app on your phone
  3. When the application opens, click the plus sign at the top right of the screen and then select Upload
  4. Locate the file you want to share on Instagram, then click to upload it to OneDrive
  5. When done, click the files tab at the bottom of the screen, then select the file you just uploaded
  6. When the file opens, click the share icon, then click Copy Link
  7. Make sure the permission is set to Can edit
  8. Then click Copy Link again to get the link for the file
  9. Finally, go to Instagram and paste the link, then send it to the person you want to share the document with

Using Google Drive

Anyone using an Android phone already has a Google account. This makes Google Drive a much easier option to use than Microsoft OneDrive. To share a link to a word document in Google Drive with someone on Instagram, follow these steps:

On the phone:
  1. Launch the Google Drive app on your phone
  2. If it is not already installed, you can download it from the Play Store or App Store
  3. When it opens, sign in to your Google account if prompted
  4. If you are not prompted to log in, it is likely that you are already logged in. Look in the upper right corner of the screen to see if you have the initial of your Google name
  5. Once logged in, click on the File tab
  6. Then click the + icon and select Upload to upload a file
  7. Locate the file you want to share and click on it to upload it to Google Drive
  8. Once the file is uploaded, you will find it on the same file page in Google Drive
  9. Click on the file to open it
  10. When the file opens, click the three vertical dots at the top of the screen, then click Share & Export
  11. Then click Copy Link to copy the link for the file
  12. Finally, go to Instagram and paste the link, then send it to the person
On the desktop:
  1. Go to drive.google.com and sign in to your account
  2. On the left side of the screen, click New, then click File Upload
  3. Select the file you want to share and upload it
  4. After uploading, find the file in the file page and right click on it.
  5. Then click Get Shareable Link
  6. Copy the created link, paste it and send it to the person on Instagram
  7. Once you have completed the above steps and sent the link to the person on Instagram, the person can simply click the link to open the word document in a web browser or word processor

Converti in MP4

If the document you want to share doesn’t necessarily have to be in document format, you can also convert it to video format and share it very easily on Instagram. Instagram supports sharing files in the following video formats:

  • MP4
  • MOV
  • GIF

Of these, the best and most compatible is MP4. Therefore we recommend you to convert the word document to MP4 format using an online document converter.

  1. Visit any website to convert documents to MP4
  2. The process is pretty much the same on both desktop and mobile browser

  3. When the Export to Image menu opens, you can select the desired export format, quality and location
  4. Make sure you select png or jpg as the format
  5. For quality, select the standard so that there is no loss of quality after conversion
  6. Change the export path to a location where you can find the converted word document easily
  7. Finally click on Export

You can then locate the converted file and share it on Instagram as an image.

Using an online converter

As an alternative to the method described above, which may require some form of payment, you can use a free online converter to convert the word document to image format and then share it on Instagram.

  1. Visit a site that allows you to convert documents to images and click Upload File
  2. Select the word document you want to convert and click Open

The word document will be converted immediately but in zip format

  2. Next, navigate to the location of the downloaded zip file and proceed to extract.

The number of photos will be equivalent to the number of pages in the word document
