The choices you make during the original Until Dawn or its 2024 remake directly affect which of the game’s main characters will survive Until Dawn. On the other hand, unlike the original, the remake has a completely new ending involving Josh – this time, the guy can survive, and then you’ll see a completely new cutscene at the end of the game. So this time, the best ending will be the one in which all the friends who went on vacation to Blackwood Pines survive.
In the original 2015 version of Until Dawn , Josh could either die at the hands of a wendigo or survive an encounter with the monster but then turn into one. Ballistic Moon decided to please fans by revisiting the character’s fate and providing opportunities for his salvation.
Can Josh really be saved? Yes.
In the original game, Josh had two outcomes – he could die at the hands of Hannah or survive, but become a wendigo. First, you should understand – this is an important character in the whole story, so he can only die closer to the end of the game, in the tenth chapter. A similar situation, for example, with Sam and Mike. Josh, like Jess, Chris and Matt, can only die outside the house. The bodies of all these characters, if they die, will not be found (but if at least one of the main characters survives, the police will go to the mines and find the dead). Secondly, for Josh to survive , you must find the right clue, and then instead of the ending of the original game, you will see a completely different cutscene. Josh’s fate directly depends on Sam’s actions.
In the original game, if you manage to save Josh from Hannah, a cutscene with him is triggered at the very end: the guy tries to satisfy his hunger by eating the corpse of a stranger (a guy with a flamethrower), after which, like his sister Hannah, he turns into a wendigo. Both options look pretty grim, and back in 2015, fans of the game asked the developers to provide an option to save Josh. And now, with the release of the remake , the fans’ expectations have been crowned with success: you can still get both endings from the original, but there is a third ending. If you want to save Josh, and also make sure that he does not turn into a wendigo, it is important to make several mandatory decisions.
Last Conversation with Dr. Hill
When Josh goes crazy and it turns out that he was the one torturing his friends, it turns out that Dr. Hill has been communicating with him throughout the game. The guy suffers from hallucinations. In the cutscene, when the doctor asks why Josh hurt his friends, you need to say that they hurt him. As soon as the therapist continues to reproach the guy and points out that there is another way out of the situation, select the phrase “I’m so sorry.”
Hannah’s Diary
That’s not all. Next, as in the original, you need to find Hannah’s diary. You can do this in Chapter 10, while walking through the mine with Sam and Mike. You will control Sam. When you reach the area with water, go down, but do not rush to go forward after Mike. Instead, turn left and find a ledge that you can climb. After doing this, look at the ground and pick up Hannah’s diary. Read it completely to get the butterfly effect. Once you do this, go further through the cave to meet Josh. If Sam read the diary, she will tell Josh everything (a little later, when she meets him with Mike). After that, when trying to get out of the mine, when Hannah grabs Josh, he will talk to her, and the wendigo will recognize the guy as his brother. As a result, Hannah will not kill Josh. This happened in the original too, but now if you had previously spoken to Dr. Hill correctly, instead of the cutscene from the 2015 game where Josh turns into a wendigo, you’ll see a new ending to his story arc.
At the end of the game, a cutscene will start, in which, presumably, the police interrogate the survivors. Then you will see the hanging body of a stranger, and next to him – Josh sitting on the floor. Apparently, the guy reproaches himself for everything and longs for redemption. This is the best ending for Josh, which guarantees the guy’s survival and excludes his transformation into a wendigo.
P.S. Also, Josh has an additional condition for survival: saving the other characters. Otherwise, he will still become a wendigo.
