How to run System Restore from BartPE

The BartPE Bootable CD is a powerful tool that allows you to manage many different things on your computer without having to boot the operating system. If you need to recover your system, but cannot do so from the Windows GUI, you can use a BartPE bootable CD to restore your system to the last saved system restore state.

Instructions

1 Insert the BartPE CD into the computer and reboot the machine. Boot from the CD by pressing the “Boot Menu” key that appears on the computer screen after it restarts.

2 Click the “Go” button on the BartPE desktop, click “Programs” and click “A43 File Management Utility”.

Click the “C:\” drive in the window that appears next, then click “System Volume Information.” Open the folder that has “_restore” preceding it. This folder is the Restore folder for your computer.

4 Open the folder that has the highest number after the letters “RP,” such as “RP007.” Open the subfolder named “snapshot”, and then find the two files named “_REGISTRY_MACHINE_SYSTEM” and “_REGISTRY_MACHINE_SOFTWARE.” Select these two files and press “Ctrl” and “C” to copy them.

5 Use the window to navigate to the “C:\Windows\System32\Config” folder. Delete the files named “System” and “Software” and press “Ctrl” and “V” to paste into the two folders you copied. Rename the “SYSTEM” folder to “_REGISTRY_MACHINE_SYSTEM” and rename the “_REGISTRY_MACHINE_SOFTWARE” folder to “Software”.

6 Click “Go,” “Shut Down” and “Reboot.” The computer will restart, the use of system files is restored.
