Developers from Bethesda Softworks have released the long-awaited Next Gen patch for Fallout 4. The game received improved graphics, fixes for old bugs, support for wide screens on PC and portable devices, including Steam Deck. Unfortunately, instead of the expected improvements, the update practically broke the game. For those who use or like to install mods, the game actually stopped functioning. For ordinary players, things weren’t so smooth either, so many are trying to return to the original version of the game. In this guide, we’ll tell you how to roll back Fallout 4 in different ways.
The situation with Fallout 4 is reminiscent of the story with the release of the enhanced edition of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, when after the update the regular game began to work much worse. Here the situation is similar and, in some sense, even worse. If “The Witcher” allowed you to roll back to a stable version of the game without any problems, then in Fallout 4 you will have to resort to some manipulations or modifications. Below you will learn about all the available ways to refuse the Next Gen patch for Fallout 4.
How to Roll Back a Fallout 4 Patch Manually
To return to the stable version of Fallout 4, you will have to use the Steam console. The game is also available in other digital stores, but they do not allow you to repeat this process. In this case, you will have to resort to other methods, which will be described below.
So, to go back to version 1.10.163.0 on Steam, you need to open the store console. To do this, use the Run command or the keyboard shortcut WIN+R and write steam://open/consoleIn . This will open the console, where you can go directly to downloading the old version of Fallout 4.
Please note that you must run each build download one by one using the command, waiting for each one to complete before running the next one. The console will notify you when each download is complete. Commands for downloading the stable version of the game:
- download_depot 377160 377162 5847529232406005096
- download_depot 377160 377161 7497069378349273908
- download_depot 377160 377163 5819088023757897745
- download_depot 377160 435870 1691678129192680960
- download_depot 377160 435880 1255562923187931216
- download_depot 377160 393881 4735225695214536532
- download_depot 377160 435877 2675794883952625475
The codes above include both the base game and all released add-ons. If you receive “Depot download failed” messages during the download, this means that there was a glitch. Try downloading again and make sure you have purchased all the required content.
After that, go to the Steam\steamapps\content\app_377160 folder. You can find it by going to the Fallout 4 game directory and going up two levels to the steamapps folder. There you will find the files you just downloaded in separate subfolders. Copy all the files from the depot folders to the main Fallout 4 game folder, confirming the replacement of the files.
Also, don’t forget to remove all mods from the Creation Club that were installed automatically with the update. They are located in the Fallout 4\Data folder and have the following names:
- ccBGSFO4044
- ccBGSFO4046
- ccBGSFO4096
- ccBGSFO4110
- ccBGSFO4115
- ccBGSFO4116
- ccFSVFO4007
- ccSBJFO4003
- ccOTMFO4001
If you don’t do this, the game will crash. Finally, after all the manipulations, you can launch the game. You need to launch Fallout 4 only through f4se_loader.exe – the original launcher, which is located in the main directory of the game.
How to Revert to Old Patch Using Mods
If you don’t want to deal with the files yourself, you can rely on third-party user modifications. Enthusiasts have already managed to develop several automatic methods for returning to the old version of the game, without much difficulty and minimal actions from you. Such modifications can also help players who purchased the game outside of Steam.
To roll back to a previous version of Fallout 4, you can use one of the mods below:
