How to fix bad sectors in Windows 10

1. Look for bad sectors

First, look for bad sectors; you can do it in two ways:

  1. Right click on your hard drive – select Properties – choose Tools tab – select Verify – scan disk
  2. Open an elevated cmd window :
    • Go to your Home page – right click on your Home button
    • From there select Open cmd with admin rights and type chkdsk / F / R -> press Enter

Now if bad sectors are detected, remember that Windows cannot fix them. This is what you need to do to solve your problem.

2. Use the Drive Manufacturers Utility

  1. Take out your damaged hard drive.
  2. Buy a new hard drive and appropriate USB adapters.
  3. Plug your old hard drive into another computer and check for bad sectors as shown above.
  4. Then connect your new hard drive to the same computer.
  5. Next, use the disk manufacturer’s utility (just follow the onscreen wizard) and clone your old, damaged disk to your new hard disk.
  6. In the end, put the new hard drive in your Windows 10 device when done.

3. Fix disk errors through command prompt

In Windows 10, you can run a disk check using the command prompt. There are also two more commands that you can use to detect and repair logical and physical problems.

  1. Start the command prompt as administrator and type the command chkdsk C: / f > press Enter.
  2. Replace C with the letter of your hard drive partition.
