What changes in Tales of Arise?

Tales of Arise follows many of the mechanics set out in the JRPG Tales of series . The player takes on the role of a protagonist who needs to face an empire as he goes on a journey of self-discovery. Along the way, he meets distinguished companions who have their own fears and need to learn to live with each other.

The gameplay brings a lot of exploration, real-time combat, boss fights and a lot of level gain. The novelties come from the visual of the painting to the dialogues to the exploration that was expanded as never before in the franchise. Bandai Namco’s intention was to keep important features, but offer new elements to breathe new life into the series.

1. Explore a lot

When playing Tales of Arise you will notice that the game world is vast. Once you start wandering through the lands of the Dahna and Rena kingdoms, a lot can be found. I’m not just talking about monsters to defeat and gain experience, but also items and more.

It’s important to explore and collect everything you find. New recipes can be discovered and produced, dialogues between your characters can start, secrets can be revealed. It’s always worth going out of your way to see what’s behind a mountain or in the lake. Don’t let it go.

2. Dominate the battlefield

Combat is a high point in every game in this JRPG series. In Tales of Arise , the player faces enemies on a 3D field with invisible barriers. During the fight, standard attacks can be effective at first, but soon you’ll need to focus on more devastating combos.

With that in mind, it’s worth learning to connect the simple moves with the special ones called Arts. After getting used to this system, it is essential that the player learn to use the movement of avoidance ( Evade ). Since there is no way to defend against enemy attacks, the ideal is to deviate at the most opportune moments and punish the opponent’s error.

3. Discover weaknesses

The simplest enemies can be defeated without much focus on strategy, on the other hand there are those bigger opponents that will take a lot of work if you’re not prepared. While playing Tales of Arise , you’ll notice that many opponents have body parts that glow orange. This is the enemy’s weakness.

When you find a weak point, keep your focus and your attacks on it until you destroy it. This will cause the opponent to unbalance, opening a window for their most powerful combos.

4. Cook for your friends

The act of cooking is standard in the series. Using the recipes to prepare that meal for your teammates is something very important in this game. Altogether there are 38 recipes that can be discovered by playing Tales of Arise . Each of them gives some kind of buff like an increase in defense or attack, for example.

Also, if a character prepares the recipe he likes the most, a bonus will be achieved for everyone who eats this dish. In short: cook quite often as this will always help in battles.

5. Abuse of Fast Travels

The vast majority of Tales of games do not feature Fast Travel. As you continue on your journey in adventure, many locations will be discovered. Fortunately, in Tales of Arise you have the option of going from place to place with a simple push of a button.

To enable Fast Travel , you need to get to the Battle Preparations mission and go through a place called Fagan Ruins . The option will be unlocked shortly thereafter.

From there, whenever you find new places and camps, it will be possible to travel to those you have already visited in a simple way. To use Fast Travel, just open the map and press the indicated button to open a list of locations. Choose what you want to visit and you’re done.
