How to map a network drive in Windows?

The possibilities that the introduction of computers gave for the common use of people worldwide, produced that we had access to new technologies and new options to automate work or common tasks of daily life without the need to resort to an expert so that he could operate a complex team for us.

One of the greatest qualities to highlight in this aspect is the possibility of interconnecting any device allowing free interaction between computers, mobile devices or tablets to share any type of information, which are normally done through the Wi-Fi connection.

The best known method is applied to computers by mapping the operating system in a network that both computers have in common , with which they can share any type of files freely through global folders.

What is the importance of the version of Windows that I have to do a mapping?

When carrying out a mapping it is important to note that it will depend entirely on our Wi-Fi network , issued by our device of the brand of our liking, these are increasingly being renewed with updated versions that make them incompatible with outdated versions of operating systems.

Such may be the case of Windows, known as one of the commonly used ones, which currently only provides support for versions of Windows 8 and Windows 10, versions with numerous customization options in which it is possible to perform such mapping.

What do I need to know before doing a network mapping through Windows?

If we want to carry out the mapping on our computers, we must bear in mind that there are certain conditions that must be met and we must check our operating system because, otherwise, errors are likely to appear or it is not possible to complete the process effectively .

Identify the IP address of the router

The main thing is to know the IP address to which we are connected where the predefined addresses for routers are usually 192.168.1.1.

In case we are connected to a  Network Attached Storage (NAS) we will have to determine the IP address of the device that we have connected to said network, but its default address is usually 192.168.1.77.

Verify that you are connected to the main network

Just as it is important to know the IP address of the network to which we are connected, we also need to ensure that we are connected to the network where all the devices with which we will perform the mapping are located, otherwise it will not be possible to share information.

What methods are there to connect a network drive in Windows 8 and 10?

As in process or configuration in our operating system, we have more than one way to obtain the results we want , and in this article we describe the different ways in which you can achieve them:

Using Windows CMD

In the case of carrying out the process with commands, it will be a quick process, we will only have to make use of the following code in the Windows CMD , which we can access from the task bar :

  • Net use Z: \\ server \ user / persistent: yes

Where the server represents the name that we will give to our server and user the name of the partition of our disk that will be mapped.

From the PC icon

If we want to carry out the process without using code, we will only have to carry out the following very simple steps:

  • We go to the Computer or My PC icon , right click and select the option to map network drive, a window will appear in which we will have to enter the IP address of the router.
  • Then, we will click on Browse and double-click on the address of our router.
  • We will then take care of selecting the name of the USB Storage deviceand click “OK”. We will check the reconnect box when logging in and click on finish

How long does it take to set up a network for this system?

The great thing about this process is that it takes a matter of minutes , so you don’t have to worry about long setup waits.

Why can’t the network drive connect in Microsoft Windows?

The main reason why you can not connect to the network, may be because we are already connected to one or we inserted some data wrong, in case of being previously connected to one, we only have to go to the icon of my PC, do Right click and select the disconnect option. Any problem that may arise, contact Microsoft support for Windows .
