Learn how to easily capture a high-quality photo from a video on your Android device in just a few simple steps.
Video and images are closely related types of content. Video consists of several images, one smoothly flows into another. One second of video can contain from 10 to 120 frames, usually we call this indicator FPS (frames per second). While it can be difficult to make a video from individual frames, it is much easier to catch a frame from a video.
Let’s take a closer look at how to make a photo from a video on Android using system functionality and additional applications.
How to take a screenshot on smartphones with the Android operating system
A screenshot (or screen shot) is an image that captures what is happening on the screen of your device. You can take a screenshot on Android smartphones in different ways, depending on the device model and operating system version. Let’s look at the main methods.
Power and Volume Down buttons
The most common method.
- Open the screen you want to capture;
- Press and hold the power button and the volume down button at the same time for about 1-2 seconds;
- You will hear a clicking sound and the screen may flash briefly, indicating that the screenshot has been taken.
The screenshot will be automatically saved in your device’s gallery, in the “Screenshots” folder.
Tip : If the combination doesn’t work, try pressing the buttons a little faster or a little slowe
Power button and home button
This method works for some older models with a physical Home button. For example, Samsung Galaxy up to S8 models.
- Go to the screen you want to capture;
- Press and hold the Power button and the Home button at the same time;
- Hold them until the screen flashes or you hear a clicking sound;
- The screenshot will be saved in your gallery in the “Screenshots” folder.
Using the Notification Panel
If for some reason one of your buttons doesn’t work well, you can take a screenshot using the notification panel. This method is less maneuverable than the previous ones, as it takes time for unnecessary actions. The author of the text used it when the power button on an old phone sank into the case after a fall.
- Go to the desired screen;
- Swipe down on the screen to bring up the notification panel;
- Find and tap the Screenshot icon.
The screen will be captured instantly and the screenshot will be saved in the gallery.
Gestures and voice commands
Gadgets support not only screenshots using function buttons and combinations. There are more convenient ways to capture a smartphone screen. Xiaomi smartphones, for example, have made a quick swipe on the screen a convenient and fast way to take a screenshot. Let’s set up a gesture method on this device:
- Go to Settings;
- Find the Advanced Settings section;
- Go to the Gesture Functions section;
- Go to the Screenshot option.
Now you can take a screenshot with a light three-finger tap on the screen.
If you don’t want to touch your phone at all, you can set up a screenshot with your voice. On devices with Google Assistant or Samsung Bixby, say “Okay Google, take a screenshot” or “Hey Bixby, take a screenshot.” The voice assistant will swoop down and capture the current screen position. If, of course, you have it enabled .
If you want a bit of a professional approach, we suggest downloading an application to take a screenshot from a video. The application’s functionality is tailored to such a narrow task. There are a lot of similar applications, but we offer the most convenient and intuitive examples.
Video to Photo Frame Grabber
This is one of the best options for taking a screenshot of a video. Let’s look at the installation process and functionality of this software.
After installing the application, launch it and click on the icon with the “+” sign. This will allow you to open the gallery and select the desired video from which you need to extract frames. In order to enter the gallery, the program will ask you for the appropriate permissions. Mark the desired video and open it in the program’s internal player.
While watching the video, pause it on the frame you want to capture. Once you have decided on the frames, click the “Photo” button. If necessary, change the resolution of the resulting image using the built-in cropping tools.
Picture Extractor
Another example of how a highly specialized application tailored to a specific task can exist. Here you also simply upload a video to the program and click on the camera icon on the right side of the screen on the desired frame. After clicking this button, the screenshot will be automatically saved on your device.
Photo Extractor from Video
Download
An application similar to the previous one, but with some functional improvements. It allows you to extract frames not only from already shot video, but also to shoot the material yourself. The service offers three operating modes, they are similar to each other, but each has its own nuances:
- Timed Snapshot— you set the time interval from which you want to get a frame. Suitable if you know the exact timecode of the moment you need.
- Moment Captureis a more familiar format, where you manually mark a segment of the video and click the “Snap” button to take a screenshot. Convenient if you have a rough idea of where the frame you need is.
- Frame Snap— Taking pictures using an automated system. By pressing one button, the program itself makes a certain number of the most successful screenshots. It will come in handy when you need to take a lot of pictures, and you are too lazy to click manually.
You can edit your favorite photos by cropping or applying a filter in the app’s internal editor. It’s quite modest, but it’s enough for basic needs. Any extras can be added in a third-party image editor on Android.

Another simple software for extracting frames, but with a nicer design. Scroll through the selected video by holding the timeline with it and moving it left and right across the screen. Then, by clicking on the icon with a sheet of paper pressed with a nail button, you take a screenshot.
