You have heard so much about it and in the end you too have decided to buy a device equipped with Amazon alexa. But only now do you realize that making your home smart with this device is not that simple and I would like to connect Alexa to the lights but you don’t know where to start. No problem, the procedure may seem difficult at the beginning but taking the hand you will realize that it is all very simple.
There are actually different types of light bulbs that you can connect to Alexa, and the setup changes depending on the make and model. In this guide I will explain how to connect light bulb to alexa for the main brands currently available on the market.
- Link Alexa to the lights
- Controls for the lights
Link Alexa to the lights
The easiest and cheapest way to connect Alexa to your lights is to buy smart led bulbs . These are in fact normal LED bulbs which, however, communicate with Alexa via wifi or zigbee protocol. They are therefore smart because these bulbs can be turned on and off remotely (for example with a voice command from Alexa) and program their ignition and operation.
Buying smart bulbs is not the only way to connect a bulb to alexa, you could in fact insert a wifi relay in the wiring of the bulbs (the most famous and cheapest is the sonoff) but I do not recommend it because it requires an installation that is not exactly simple for everyone. Another method for wall plug lamps could be to buy a smart socket, which basically interfaces with the socket and allows you to control it on and off via voice command.
You will find many smart bulbs for sale on the internet and for all tastes. Alexa compatible smart bulbs usually have the Alexa logo on the box so it’s hard to go wrong. If you have an echo device with a zigbee hub (echo plus or 10-inch echo show) then I recommend smart bulbs with zigbee protocol and in particular the Philips Lighting series or the Ikea TRÅDFRI bulbs which, however, are not easy to configure (read this guide to about); for all other Alexa devices I recommend bakibo smart bulbs .
I highly recommend that you read this article and you will find in detail the best smart bulbs on the market.
Regardless of the make or model, to connect Alexa to the lights you will need to use the alexa app from your smartphone. The procedure for connecting light bulb to alexa is similar for all light bulbs but some brands will need their skill enabled in order to function properly.
So to connect the light bulb to Alexa, open the Alexa app from your smartphone and press the devices button in the bar at the bottom of the screen. At this point, press the key with the + symbol at the top right and in the menu that opens, select the Add device item ; on the next screen select Bulb as the device type from the device list.
In the next screen you will need to specify the brand of the bulb; if the brand is not present in the list then select the item Other . A new window will open from which you will have to press the Find devices button and Alexa will start searching for new devices.
If the bulb is natively compatible with Alexa such as Philips Lighting then it will be immediately detected; otherwise you will have to install the skill (read this guide) of the manufacturer and repeat the whole operation.
Once the light bulb has been detected, you can complete the procedure to connect Alexa to the lights simply by selecting the room where the light bulb is located and pressing the Add to group button and then pressing the Done button .
The procedure for connecting light bulb to alexa is now complete but it is advisable to assign a specific name to the light bulb which will be useful when you turn it on with voice commands. To assign a name to the light bulb from the Alexa app, press the devices button in the bottom bar of the screen and then press light bulbs. Then select the light bulb you want to change the name of and then press the settings button (the button with the symbol of a gear wheel).
The light bulb settings screen will open, from here press on the Edit name item and enter the name you want to assign to the light bulb in the relevant box and when you are done press on the word Finish.
Controls for the lights
Once you have successfully linked Alexa to the lights, you can use voice commands to turn the lights on and off directly from your Alexa device. If you have decided to connect a light bulb to dimmable alexa you can also adjust its intensity.
To turn a light on or off, just say
- “Alexa, turn on (light name)”
- “Alexa, turn off (light name)”
where name Light is the name you assigned to the light bulb during registration.
